Research MarketingTelling the good story about great researchResources for research can come from a variety of sources: federal agencies, NGOs, state government, quasi-governmental agencies, and the private sector. In light of the range of potential funders, it is perhaps now more important than ever to articulate the value of research in the broadest possible context. To this end, RL&D publishes the Research ACCESS newsletter and produces the annual Report on Research [PDF] that highlights exemplary research campuswide. We also work directly with investigators to develop their own compelling "research story." The good story captures the imagination and grabs attention immediately. It makes the reader/listener want to learn more. It clearly identifies both the problem and the path that can be followed to solve it. A good research story does all of this in the first few sentences, then elaborates in as much detail as necessary for a given audience. With a good story in hand, RL&D draws on a large network of leaders from academe, government, and industry to raise awareness about and increase support for the great research of UMass Amherst.
