RL&D provides strategic consultation and implementation services for interdisciplinary (IDR) research enterprise startups.

Strategic Beginnings:

  • Identity development
    • Compelling articulation of the “problem opportunity” for industry, government, and academic audiences.
    • Preparation of white papers and related strategic marketing materials.
    • Benchmarking research
  • Funding Opportunities
    • Because of the potential for broader impacts, a range of seed funding from University, government, and industry sources may be available for IDR.
    • Seed funding may be available through University programs and/or State agencies.
    • Proposal development
  • Preliminary “Enterprise Plan”
    • It's never too early to think about sustainability
    • Informal SWOT analysis
    • Benchmarking related centers/institutes

Building Awareness:

  • Coordinate/convene meetings/seminars/round tables. Goal = socialize and strengthen the IDR concept.
  • Establish institutional presence
    • Initiate Faculty Senate approval process
    • Web presence
    • Research news coverage

Networking and Partnerships:

  • Identify related industry (i.e. preliminary market research)
  • Connect with State, NGO, UMass system, and industry players.
  • Creation of advisory board, both for guidance and network expansion.
  • Work towards first public event (e.g. conference)

Transition to full-time center/institute management (if necessary):

  • Assist in Managing Director search
  • Work with incoming MD through transition
