UMass Amherst Joins MentorNet for 2008-2009

MentorNet is the award-winning e-mentoring network that is increasing retention and success rates for individuals in engineering, science, mathematics, and technology, especially for women and others underrepresented in these fields.  MentorNet's One-on-One program links highly motivated protégés with mentors who are professionals in industry, government, and higher education.  It serves undergraduates, graduate students, post-docs, and pre-tenure faculty .  In addition to its One-on-One mentoring relationships, MentorNet offers discussion groups, a resume database, and other useful resources to professionals and students.

Having a mentor is the primary factor identified as making a difference in retaining talented women and people of color in engineering and related science and mathematics fields.  A Mentor is a volunteer who serves as a resource and trusted guide.  A protégé (mentee) is an individual who grows through the guidance of a more experienced person.

MentorNet Proteges say:

“My mentor has taught me how to be a better student and a better scientist.”

“This reaffirmed my belief that I want to be an engineer.”

MentorNet Mentors say:

“This is so rewarding, yet so painless.”

“I have been pleasantly surprised by the disproportionately large sense of satisfaction I receive relative to the small time commitment.”
