Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at UMass

Each summer the University of Massachusetts campus hosts several REU programs—Research Experience for Undergraduates—in a wide range of subject areas. The programs are sponsored by institutions like the National Science Foundation, Howard Hughes Medical Foundation, and the UMass Office of the Provost.

Below is a list of programs scheduled for Summer 2008. Subject matter, stipends, schedules, and application details can be found at the websites listed. There may also be REU opportunities for individuals in other labs. Please contact research programs of interest to see which REU program they are allied with.

CASA Research Experience
for Undergraduates (REU) Program

A 9-week intensive research experience that offers a select group of undergraduate students the opportunity to work alongside leading engineers, scientists, and computer science experts from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the University of Oklahoma, Colorado State University, and the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, as well as corporate partners.

Collaborative Undergraduate Research
in Energy (CURE)

This Chemistry REU program, under the auspices of MassCREST, the Massachusetts Center for Renewable Energy Science and Technology, is 10-week collaborative program. Research projects are available in the areas of solar energy, fuel cells, batteries, and biomass conversion systems.  The stipend is $4,000

College of Engineering Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)

Computer Science Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)

Cornell/UMA Food Science Summer Scholar Program (REU)

Undergraduates will plan and conduct experiments under the mentorship of faculty members on the UMass campus and will participate in other career-related activities. Deadline February 15.

Five College Astronomy Summer Internships

Undergraduate interns from the 5-colleges (Amherst, Smith, Mt. Holyoke, Hampshire, UMass-Amherst) will work with department faculty in a wide variety of areas including astrophysics of stars, the interstellar medium, and galaxies.  They will have opportunities to work with radio, infrared, optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray data and instruments. Stipend $4000.  2008 deadline March 1.

HHMI Undergraduate Science Program

The Summer Research Internship Program provides 12 undergraduate students/year with an 8 week program of authentic laboratory research experiences in the life sciences. Students will work on research projects of their choice and develop quantitative and computational skills while working closely with a lab mentor and the principal investigator of the host lab. Institute for Cellular Engineering (ICE) REU Program

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) on Polymers

Qualifying undergraduates interested in obtaining research experience in polymer science and engineering the opportunity to join a faculty-supervised research laboratory in the UMass MRSEC for a ten-week period during the summer of each. The stipend for this program is $3,500 inclusive.

Nanoscale Science and Engineering

Baystate-UMA Summer Scholar Program

A mentored research program for rising college seniors and medical students (between the first and second years) who are exploring the potential of a career in medical, biomedical, public health, or behavioral health research. Summer Program for Undergraduate Research

The program provides hands-on positive research experiences and mentoring in a supportive setting. Sponsored by the Northeast Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (NEAGEP).
