Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at UMass

Each summer the University of Massachusetts campus hosts several REU programs—Research Experience for Undergraduates—in a wide range of subject areas. The programs are sponsored by institutions like the National Science Foundation, Howard Hughes Medical Foundation, and the UMass Office of the Provost.

Below is a list of programs scheduled for Summer 2009. Subject matter, stipends, schedules, and application details can be found at the websites listed. There may also be REU opportunities for individuals in other labs. Please contact The Office of Undergraduate Research & Scholarship (OURS).

	CASA Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program May 31 - August 1, 2009 Visit Website A 9-week intensive research experience that offers a select group of undergraduate students the opportunity to work alongside leading engineers, scientists, and computer science experts from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the University of Oklahoma, Colorado State University, and the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, as well as corporate partners.
	Collaborative Undergraduate Research in Energy (CURE) June 1 - August 7, 2009 Visit Website This Chemistry REU program, under the auspices of MassCREST, the Massachusetts Center for Renewable Energy Science and Technology, is 10-week collaborative program. Research projects are available in the areas of solar energy, fuel cells, batteries, and biomass conversion systems. The stipend is $4,000
	College of Engineering Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) (for summer 2010) Visit Website Working alongside leading faculty and their graduate students.
	Computer Science Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) May 31 - August 7, 2009 Visit Website Students will conduct research with faculty members in these areas: Mobile and Sensor Networks, Bioinformatics, RFID Security, Robotics and Software Systems and Architecture . Deadline March 20, 2009.
	Cornell/UMA Food Science Summer Scholar Program (REU) June 1 - August 7, 2009 Visit Website Undergraduates will plan and conduct experiments under the mentorship of faculty members on the UMass campus and will participate in other career-related activities. Deadline February 14, 2009.
	Five College Astronomy Summer Internships June 1 - August 7, 2009 Visit Website Undergraduate interns from the 5-colleges (Amherst, Smith, Mt. Holyoke, Hampshire, UMass-Amherst) will work with department faculty in a wide variety of areas including astrophysics of stars, the interstellar medium, and galaxies. They will have opportunities to work with radio, infrared, optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray data and instruments. Stipend $4000. 2008 deadline April 30.
	HHMI Undergraduate Science Program Department of Biology, UMass Amherst Visit Website The Summer Research Internship Program provides 12 undergraduate students/year with an 8 week program of authentic laboratory research experiences in the life sciences. Students will work on research projects of their choice and develop quantitative and computational skills while working closely with a lab mentor and the principal investigator of the host lab. 	Institute for Cellular Engineering (ICE) REU Program June 1 to July 31, 2009 Visit Website To provide research experiences in applied systems biology, cell delivery, and protein engineering. 	Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) on Polymers Visit Website Qualifying undergraduates interested in obtaining research experience in polymer science and engineering the opportunity to join a faculty-supervised research laboratory in the UMass MRSEC for a ten-week period during the summer of each. The stipend for this program is $3,500 inclusive.
	Nanoscale Science and Engineering Summer Research Experience (SURE) June 1 - August 7, 2009 Visit Website The SURE (Summer Undergraduate Research Experiences) Program in Nanotechnology is a 10-week lab-and-learning experience for students interested in the field of nanoscale science and engineering. 	The Summer Dialect Research Project (SDRP) June 7 - June 20, 2009 Visit Website This project of the Center for the Study of African American Language (CSAAL) provides research experiences in linguistics for undergraduates with interest in language-related disciplines with a focus on the description of patterns in African American English (AAE). The stipend is $520 plus free room and board. Deadline April 1.
	Baystate-UMA Summer Scholar Program June 1 - August 7, 2009 Visit Website A mentored research program for rising college seniors and medical students (between the first and second years) who are exploring the potential of a career in medical, biomedical, public health, or behavioral health research. The 10-week summer program offers the opportunity to participate a research project from start to finish. Deadline: March 20, 2009
	Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (for summer 2010) Visit Website To introduce undergraduate students to STEM research and prepare them for graduate school and academic careers in STEM disciplines. The program provides hands-on positive research experiences and mentoring in a supportive setting. Sponsored by the Northeast Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (NEAGEP).
