Report on Inter-institutional Research Collaborations

2005-2010

Snapshot, as of January 2011

Collaboration between universities is increasing, and so is funding to increase it. For large sponsored projects, such as NSF center proposals, it is more or less required. Accordingly, UMass Amherst faculty have forged many ties in the valley, the state, the region, the country, and abroad. Those that are institutionalized at the level of a research subcontract are explored in this report.

The object of the report is to document the extent of inter-institutional activity in sponsored research and to identify the main players. Its purpose is informational, but also to provide a starting point for researchers who are looking for a link to another university. Most such associations arise organically from previous collaborations and one's own disciplinary knowledge, but sometimes, it is useful to leverage our networks by tapping into other faculty's links.

V. Epscor State Connections

Epscor is an NSF program to develop research infrastructure in states with fewer resources and less funding for research. A program of co-funding means that projects with an epscor partner get a competitive advantage. The 25 states are AL, AK, AR, DE, HI, ID, IA, KS, KY, LA, ME, MS, MT, NE, NV, NH, NM, ND, OK, PR, RI, SC, SD, TN, VI, UT, VT, WV, AND WY.

Methodological Notes:

Subcontracts “IN,” UMass the subcontractee:

Jordan on Line: Query “sponsor” – “other universities”

Subcontracts “OUT,” UMass the subcontractor

Comptroller’s Office report of payments to other universities for “research”

First, we calculated the number of subcontracts, where UMass is the subcontractOR, as well as where another university has engaged UMass in a subcontract as the subcontractEE. (The first is contracts paid out, the second is contracts that pay money to UMass.) Then the 350 or so institutions in the tally were labeled by hand and sorted according to different parameters.

Particular attention is paid to minority serving institutions (Hispanic and Historically Black Colleges), community colleges, institutions in “Epscor” states, and abroad as those categories are particularly useful for achieving diversity and are often cited specifically in RFPs.

Data Sources:The OGCA Jordan on Line database is freely available on line (from an on-campus computer) and can be easily updated or confirmed. “Contracts-out” are not currently in the OGCA database and may be updated less frequently. All steps, but particularly the hand labeling is subject to error, so please help us by notifying us of any errors or omissions.

Potential Discrepancies in the data:

Comptroller’s report appears to have other government entities, ngo’s, industry; Also, it is money paid in a given year, whereas JOL reports the fiscal year the relationship was created/ funded.

Names of universities were not always written the same: “Univ” vs “university” etc. I made some corrections, but left some where I was not sure if it was a distinct entity, so I may have left some that should be collapsed and vice versa.
