Radiation Safety and the RUC
Oversight of the use of radioactive agents, radiation sources and x-ray generating equipment at the University is in accordance with the University’s Radioactive Materials License and X-ray Permits issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Radiation Control Program. The radiation safety program is administered by the Radiation Use Committee (RUC). The RUC reports to the Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement. The RUC reviews proposed use of radioactive materials, radiation sources and x-ray generating equipment: incidents and violations involving licensed activities; laser safety and microwave safety issues and other business involving radiation brought to its attention by researchers and the Radiation Safety Services personnel. Radiation Safety Services, a group within Environmental Health & Safety, works closely with the RUC to ensure that the radiation safety program complies with all state and federal government regulations, licenses and permits.
