Biological Safety and the IBC
Oversight of the use of biohazardous agents in research and teaching is governed by numerous Federal, state and, sometimes, local laws and regulations. The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is charged by the National Institutes of Health to provide review and oversight of activities involving the use of recombinant or synthetic DNA technology. The University IBC also reviews other research that must be conducted at Biosafety Level 3, including the use of Select Agents, and reviews activities conducted at BL1 and BL2 brought to its attention by the Biosafety Officer. The IBC works closely with EH&S’ Biosafety Services. No research at BL4 is conducted at the University.
