Centers and Institutes

UMass Amherst is home to over 60 campus-based research centers and institutes spanning a wide array of disciplines and specialties within and across campus. Research and Engagement supports and assists in the development and management of centers and institutes from preliminary stages through Faculty Senate approval. It also carries out regular reviews and reporting as required by applicable university policy

To request interim or permanent approval, see the box at right. To better understand the process, see the Interim Approval Flowchart (pdf) or the Permanent Status Flowchart (pdf). Note: It is strongly recommended that initial work on a center or institute proposal be done to develop a sustainable financial model prior to seeking interim approval.

UMass Amherst research strengths align with national, state, and regional priorities including advanced materials and manufacturing; applied life sciences and health; data science and computational science; cognitive science; the arts and creative economy; energy, climate science, and sustainability; and equity and inclusion.
