Request for Information from the Institutional Biosafety Committee

If you have received, or receive in the future, inquiries concerning Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) issues, e.g. requests for IBC minutes under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), please forward them to Dr. Hilary Woodcock in Research Affairs (hilaryw@ora.umass.edu). Any other inquiries concerning biosafety issues on this campus should be addressed to the Biosafety Officer, Dr. Maureen O’Leary, in EH&S (mcoleary@ehs.umass.edu)

______________________________________________________________________

Recently a number of academic institutions (but not UMass Amherst) received a request for IBC minutes from a private organization researching how well Institutional Biosafety Committees (IBCs) are performing their federally-mandated functions. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules (http://www4.od.nih.gov/oba/rac/guidelines_02/NIH_Guidelines_Apr_02.htm) and the FOIA require that IBC minutes at institutions that receive NIH funding be made available to the public upon request.

The UMass Amherst biosafety program is conducted in accordance with federal regulations and guidelines. Copies of our IBC minutes will be forwarded to any concerned party that contacts me and requests them. If you receive any enquiries of this nature please direct them to me and please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns.
