MECHANISMS FOR PERIODIC REVIEW OF POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

The IRB Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) manual is written and maintained by the HRPO. This manual outlines the specific details of UMASS’ policies and procedures for following Federal, state, and local regulations for the ethical and safe conduct of research and the protection of human participants. Applicable sections are updated as necessary to reflect changes in Federal, state, and local regulations and UMASS’ policies. All sections are reviewed by the IRB Chairs or their designees. The IRB Standard Operating Procedures manual is provided to new members when they receive their orientation to board membership. The manual is available electronically at http://www.umass.edu/research/comply/SOPS/SOPSIndex.htm.

These SOP’s have been created with the guidance of the Federal Regulations in 45 CFR 46, the Office of Human Research Protections (OHRP) web resources, the publication Institutional Review Board, Management and Function, 2 nd Edition, by Elizabeth Bankert and Robert Amdur, and with the sharing of resources of the Penn State University IRB.
