INSTITUTIONAL AUTHORITY

The University of Massachusetts Amherst (hereafter referred to as UMASS) operates a program to review all human participant research including a wide range of biomedical and social science fields. The University of Massachusetts has established an Institutional Review Board (IRB) that reviews all funded research. Local Review Boards, where established, review unfunded protocols. When a Local Review Board is not available, the IRB carries out the review. IRB oversight takes place in the Human Research Protection Office (HRPO) located at the following address:

Throughout this document, the use of “institutional official” will refer to the UMASS Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost. "The Chair" refers to the Chair of the IRB as appointed by the Institutional Official. The Human Protection Administrator (HPA) refers to the individual designated with administrative responsibility for oversight of the human protection programs. The HPA is the Associate Director of the Office of Research Affairs (ORA).
