Janice Telfer, Ph.D. Professor in the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Click the thumbnail to enlarge or Press ReleaseAs part of a new series to bring the exciting research ideas of the UMass Amherst campus to local citizens, Professor Janice Telfer of the Veterinary and Animal Sciences department will speak October 6 at the Hitchcock Center. Those interested in learning more about scientific innovations being developed here in Amherst are invited to attend this non-technical program sponsored by the Office of Research and Engagement. Dr. Telfer works with adult stem cells of the blood and immune system to expand their capacity. These crucial cells are the key players in the revolutionary bone marrow transplants used to treat diseases of the blood and immune system. When applied to bone marrow transplants, her work has the potential to make them safer and more effective.
Future speakers in the series are other awardees of the Armstrong Fund for Science, Professor Yeonhwa Park of the Department of Food Sciences and Professor Jennifer Ross of the Department of Physics.
This free program is suitable for all members of the community, from teens to seniors. Light refreshments will be served.
