Disseminating Research & Scholarship - A Call to Action

The Digital Quadrangle series was established in the spring of 2006 as a lecture series to explore scholarly communication topics as they relate to research, scholarship, and teaching in the digital age. On September 24th the campus will host the first lecture in the 4th annual Digital Quadrangle series devoted to discussing the campus's role in preserving faculty and student research and scholarship through the digital repository "Scholarworks." Guest speakers are Harvard's Stuart Scieber and MIT's Ann Wolpert, two authors of a recently released report by the AAU, ARL, CNI, and APLU entitled, "The University's Role in the Dissemination of Research and Scholarship - A Call to Action." See the program for full details.

The goal of ScholarWorks is to showcase the breadth of work that is done on this campus and expand access to this knowledge to other researchers and the general public.  It also preserves the work of our faculty and students so that it can be accessed by future scholars.

The Digital Quadrangle Series is made possible with the support of the UMass Amherst Libraries, the Office of Research & Engagement, the Graduate School and the Office of the Provost.  For more information about Scholarworks visit its website or contact Marilyn Billings.

Integrated Sciences Building Dedicated
The campus dedicated its new 157,000-square-foot Integrated Sciences Building on September 14th, 2009. The anchor of a planned new science complex, the $114.5 million, four-story ISB includes 85,000 square feet of modern classrooms and laboratories, a 300-seat auditorium, research laboratories and faculty offices. The Integrated Sciences Building is the first major phase in the development of a life sciences precinct that supports the emergence of UMass Amherst as a life science leader among public research universities. Read the full press release.

August Grants & Contracts Snapshot

Each month ACCESS includes a selection of grants and contracts awarded to faculty from across campus to provide a sense of what's going on in research at UMass Amherst.  These listings reflect only a small fraction of the total sponsored activity for any given month.  Since this is just a snapshot in time and grant/contract terms vary, actual award totals may be higher than the amounts listed.

The campus has begun to receive stimulus funds for research. Those grants identified as ARRA (American Recovery and Reinvestment Acts) are stimulus.
