Lab Profile: Insect Virus Lab

The Insect Virus Lab was founded approximately 20 years ago by John Burand, Associate Professor of Entomology.
Today, Burand and several other researchers use the lab to study ways to keep bees healthy. They also study viruses that cause diseases in insects. Many of these "insect pathogenic viruses" offer a safe and environmentally sound alternative to chemical insecticides. They are naturally occurring agents that are often specific to particular target insects and do not infect plants or other animals. Fruit, vegetable, berry, and flower growers can use insect pathogenic viruses to control harmful insects. [Read More]

FY '08 Research Reports Now Available

The Research Area produces two complementary publications that report on the campus's fiscal year research activities. The Office of Grant and Contract Administration (OGCA) has issued its Fiscal Year 2008 Annual Cumulative Data report. This detailed piece includes views of FY'08 proposal and award activity, distribution of award and proposal dollars by sponsor, distribution of award dollars by MBU, proposal and award trends and much more. The report is available here.

The UMass Amherst Report on Research is a marketing piece designed to give our constituents a broad view of the campus's strategic research initiatives, technology transfer, private donations for research and Research Area internal grant programs in addition to sponsored activities. A PDF of the report is here.

The Report on Research is also available in print for campus recruiting or other marketing needs. Please contact Michelle Wonsey, RL&D (545-2706) if you are interested in receiving copies.
New $1 Million UMass Life Science Research Fund

The University of Massachusetts Medical School, in conjunction with the University's President's Office, has established a "UMass Life Sciences Moment Fund." This $1 million fund, emanating from the work of the UMass Life Sciences Task Force and endorsed by the task force as a key strategic recommendation, will complement the existing and highly successful "President's Science and Technology [S&T] Initiatives Fund." Unlike the President's S&T Fund, however, the "UMass Life Sciences Moment Fund" will support projects that are inter-campus in orientation, each with a collaborator from the Worcester campus and directed towards life sciences projects related to clinical and translational research. As Economy Slows, Clean Energy Jobs May Grow

Will green industries speed up as the rest of the economy slows? There are indications that this is happening, but what are green jobs and what are the prospects for stimulating the Massachusetts economy through investments in clean energy? These questions are the subject of the Clean Energy Connections Conference and Opportunity Fair in Springfield. Saturday, Nov. 22, from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at the MassMutual Center.

The conference keynote speaker is Bracken Hendricks, a founder of the national non-profit, Apollo Alliance, and co-author of the 2007 book, Apollo's Fire: Igniting America's Clean Energy Economy. Other featured speakers are State Sen. Benjamin Downing, State Rep. Daniel Bosley, Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources commissioner Phil Giudice, and Chris Kilfoyle, president of Berkshire Photovoltaics Corp. Clean Energy Connections is intended to be a forum for the individuals and organizations accelerating the growth of the clean energy economy in Massachusetts and those seeking clean-energy career information.

A limited number of EXHIBITOR TABLES is still available. Complete information and registration: www.umass.edu/green or call 545-2706.

Participation Sought in Research on How Computers Can Boost Democracy
Stuart Shulman is a new Political Science faculty member at UMass Amherst. He is co-chair of the 10th International Digital Government Research Conference (dg.o 2009). He is also Associate Director of the National Center for Digital Government at UMass Amherst and editor of the Journal of Information Technology and Politics. Shulman writes: "I want to extend an invitation to anyone thinking of doing Digital Government (DG) research. The central focus of this interdisciplinary community of research is basic research that results in government innovation using IT to facilitate citizen-government interaction. I would be happy to meet with anyone thinking of work that might fall under this very broad domain. One of the exciting parts of DG research is meeting with agency or NGO officials in the capacity of a collaborator. In these collaborations we are forging technologies of democratic innovation."
