Upcoming CEA/REMP Seminar: Dr. Denny Way to Speak at UMass
|The Center for Educational Assessment at UMass is very pleased to announce that Dr. Denny Way, Vice President of Psychometric & Research Services at Pearson Educational Measurement, will speak at UMass on Tuesday, October 9, 2007. Dr. Way will give a seminar from 12 to 1pm in Hills South Room 151, and his talk is entitled "Research Challenges and Opportunities in a For-Profit Testing Company." An abstract is below.
"Testing companies have experienced significant growth in recent years, particularly in educational assessment, where the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 and related standards-based reform efforts have created an unprecedented demand for standardized tests in public schools. In meeting this demand, testing companies have encountered many challenges, including an increased need for psychometric research and development in support of new assessment programs and products. In this talk, I will outline several research challenges and opportunities that currently exist at one for-profit testing company (Pearson). These include computerized testing, statistical estimation and algorithm development, design of alternate assessments, and research to support the validity of a new multi-state assessment in Algebra II. I will also provide some speculations about research challenges that will be faced by testing companies in the future and offer some observations about careers for psychometricians in a for-profit environment."
