Worksheet for
Registering through SPIRE
Registration Worksheet For
Undergraduates
- Go to SPIRE.
- Logon using your 8-digit Campus ID Number and
your password.
- Click on "Academics" in menu in upper
left corner.
- Click on "Enrollment Appointment" to
see when you can use SPIRE to enroll in classes (or make changes to
your class schedule if you've already added classes). Your registration
appointment for this semester will be listed. (If the term shown in
upper right is not correct, click the "Select a Different Term"
link at the bottom.)
- On the menu, click on "Enrollment - Add or
Drop Class" to begin registration.
- If you have already registered for some
courses, your schedule will appear; buttons at the bottom will allow
you to drop/update, swap, or add additional courses. If you haven't
already registered, jump directly to step C below.
- Click on the "Drop/Update Classes"
button at the bottom to drop or change grading/units of a class already
on your schedule. Then: To Drop, select the Drop action to the
left of the exact course you want to drop and press the Submit button.
To update a class (change grading basis or units), select the
Update action to the left of the exact course you want to update and
then enter the update. Press the Submit button. Check the Update Status
column to make sure your change was successful. If not, click the
Errors for more info.
- If you click on "Swap Classes" at
the bottom of your schedule, you'll see a list of all the
credit-bearing sections you're enrolled in. Next to the course you want
the system to swap you out of (drop you from), enter the class number
of the class you want to try to get into. Press the Submit button. The
system will prepare to drop you from the class only if it can get you
into the class number you have specified. Warning: sometimes SWAP
cannot be used to move between different sections of the same course;
see "Changing Sections" on the back if you get an error after saving
your Swap.
- To add a class, click on "Add
Classes" at the bottom of the page.
- If you know it, enter the 5-digit Class
Number that identifies the section you want:
Do not enter related classes (labs, discussions) here. For a multi-part
course, just enter the lecture here; you will select the related lab or
discussion later in the add process.
If you don't know the
class number, click on the little magnifying glass to the right of the
Class Nbr field to navigate to the Schedule of Classes. There:
- Enter at least one
search criterion. Remember also to uncheck the "Open Classes Only" box
if you want to see sections that have already filled but might have
space on their wait lists. Press "Search".
- Review the list of sections.
A warning will be listed if the class has consent requirements or
requisites restricting who can register for the class through SPIRE.
(Requisites could be academic pre-requisites or eligibility
restrictions like "seniors only" or "majors only".) If you see the
warning, be sure to click on Details and review these
restrictions to make sure you are eligible to add the course.
- After reviewing the Details,
use the "Search Results" button to return to the list of
sections.
- When you've found the class
you want to add, click the check mark to its left. (If there is
no check mark, then the section you are looking at is only the
discussion or lab of a multi-part course and you need to find the
lecture instead.) You'll be taken to the Class Enrollment Options page
to continue.
|
- The "Class Enrollment Options"
page will appear. White boxes and links will appear to signal where you
have secondary choices to make about grading, units, or related
labs/discussions for this course.
- Related Component 1 (& 2):
enter the class number for the required lab and/or discussion
section(s) to accompany this lecture. If you don't know the class
number, click on the little magnifying glass and then choose a section.
If both a Related1 and a Related2 box appear, you'll need to pick a
discussion AND a lab.
- Class Permission Nbr: the
vast majority of classes do not require permission numbers. Just leave
this blank if your course does not require one.
- Units: if the class can be
taken for different credit amounts, enter the number of credits you
want.
- Choose Grading Option: if
you want to change to a different grading option (e.g. pass/fail) in
classes which offer the choice, press this link and then pick the
grading option you want..
- Click on the "Okay" button to
save your selections on the "Class Enrollment Options" page. You'll be
returned to the main Add Classes page to complete your add requests. Ok
to Wait List?: If you want to be put on the wait list if the class is
full but the online wait list has spaces, click in the "If class full…"
checkbox.
- Follow steps C.1 through 3 again to
enter any additional classes you want to add.
- Click on the "Submit" button to
submit your add requests.
- Check to see if each of your
requests was successful. If not, a red "Errors Found" link will
appear in the "Add Status" column. Press this to see a list of any and
all errors in your add request. When you have finished reading the
error messages, press the Cancel button at the bottom. (You do not need
to delete rows to remove the errors.)
Changes
You Can't Make Through SPIRE
If you need any of the following, remember they must be completed by
the end of add/drop on September 15 at 5pm:
Credit limit: Your credit limit is visible on
the SPIRE Enrollment Appointment display. To add more classes than fit
within your limit, contact your academic dean to petition for a credit
overload. No overloads are allowed before August 18.
Time Conflicts: No one may register for
classes with conflicting times. On or after August 18, if you have
spoken to both instructors and have their permission to enroll in
conflicting classes, if there is space available and if you meet all
other course requirements, come to the Registrar's Office and staff
will add you into the conflicting course.
Requisites, Full Courses, or Consent: If you
are seeking admission to a course that is already full, requires
department or instructor consent, or for which you do not meet the
requisites, you will need to get further instructions from the academic
department. Most departments are available throughout registration,
although many have limited hours during June through August.
Changing Sections: To change from a section
you are enrolled in to a different section of the same course, first
use the Schedule of Classes to see if the section you want has an
available seat. Also be sure to look at its Detail display to make sure
the section has no requisites listed that might disqualify you. If
there is any possibility you might want to keep your current section if
you can not get into the new section, do not attempt the drop/add
through SPIRE. If you are willing to drop your current section to
attempt to get into the new one, drop the class you're in and then
attempt to add the new one.
Audit a Course: Audits cannot be added through
SPIRE. Come to the Registrar's Office, after August 18.
5-College Courses: These cannot be added or
dropped through SPIRE. Go the 5-College Office in 614 Goodell.
