Five-College Registration

UMass undergraduate students can register for courses at Amherst, Hampshire, Mt. Holyoke, and Smith Colleges through the Five College Office:

Address: 614 Goodell Building
Phone: 545-5352
Email: 5collreg@acad.umass.edu

Eligibility
Part-time and full-time regular UMass students enrolled in a degree program are eligible to register for courses at any of the other four colleges. Special and Continuing Education students and first-semester freshmen are not eligible. Students must be in good academic standing (no probation, probation continued, or immediate reinstatement) and taking at least one 3-credit UMass course.

Important Information
Most Five College classes are 4 credits and qualify as UMass residency credits. No more than 8 credits (usually 2 classes) per school may be taken each semester. There is no cost for full time students, except lab or lesson fees. Grades earned at the other four colleges are recorded and factored into the UMass GPA. Attend the first class to make sure no enrollment changes have been made. If the Instructor informs you that you are not eligible to take the class, you must drop it within the add/drop period at the beginning of the semester at your Registrar's Office.

Registration Procedure
1) Pre-Registration for the Fall Semester is April 7th - 18th and Registration is from September 2nd - 15th.  These dates are also listed in the Five College Online Academic Calendar.  See UMass Five College dates.  http://www.fivecolleges.edu/academic_programs/academprog_academcal.html
2) Select course(s) from http://fivecolleges.edu.
3) Log into SPIRE:  Follow the link for the Five College Enrollment Req, under Student Home.  Read instructions and fill out the form ONLINE.  (The ONLY handwriting on the form should be signatures and dates.)  Print out two copies of each form.
During the Pre-Registration period, obtain the Instructor's signature ONLY if: the course has very limited enrollment, is a seminar, requires prerequisites, or requires the instructor’s permission.  You cannot register for an overload during the pre-registration period.
During the Add/Drop Registration period, you MUST obtain the instructor's signature on the Interchange Form.  The signature is MANDATORY.  If you want the course to fulfill a requirement for your major or minor, obtain the approval of the Chief Undergraduate Academic Advisor in that department.
(4) Submit completed Interchange and Conditions Forms to the Five College Office (in 614 Goodell Building) by the appropriate deadline.   (Please fill out a conditions form, which can be found in our office, to accompany each course request.)

Pre-registration is a request.  Enrollment, if approved, will take at least one month to appear on your SPIRE schedule.  Remember that if you do not leave room in your schedule for courses, they will not be added.  Please be sure to confirm your registration at the beginning of the semester.

Bring both copies to the Five College Interchange Office in 614 Goodell.
During Add/Drop,  Return to the Five College Interchange Office and pick up your blue receipt(s) 3 days after you turn in form(s) to confirm your enrollment.  This is your proof of enrollment until the course appears on SPIRE.

UMass Graduate students who wish to add/drop Five College courses should consult the Graduate Records Office, 534 Goodell Building. Please call 545-0024 for more information.
