Academic
Regulations
Course Registration Changes
Add/Drop Deadline: Students may add a course or drop a course with
no record through the 14th calendar day of the semester (Monday, February 6).
From the 15th calendar day (Tuesday, February 7) through the Mid-semester
date (Tuesday, March 13), courses dropped will be recorded with a grade
of ‘W’ (Withdrawn).
After the Mid-semester date (Tuesday, March 13) the student is
responsible for completing the course. Failure to do so will result in a
grade of ‘F’. If compelling extenuating circumstances exist,
the student may petition his or her undergraduate dean for late
withdrawal from the course; if approved, a ‘W’ would be
recorded.
Withdrawal From The University
Policies and procedures regarding withdrawal from the university may be
found in the Academic
Regulations handbook.
Pass/Fail Option
Undergraduate students may take one course each semester using the
pass/fail grading option. Restrictions regarding use of this option may
be found in the Academic
Regulations handbook.
Repeated Courses
Effective for courses repeated during or after the Fall 1993 semester,
students may repeat up to five courses for which they have received
grades of C-, CD, D+, D or F, and only the last grade received in the
course is included in the computation of the cumulative grade point average.
The grades received in both the original course and the repeated
enrollment remain on the student’s record. Students may not enroll
in a course more than twice without the approval of their academic
advisor or undergraduate dean. This repeat policy applies only to courses
taken at University of Massachusetts Amherst.
See the Academic
Regulations handbook for the full explanation of this policy.
Attendance Policy
Please note the following excerpt from the University attendance policy,
as published in the Academic
Regulations handbook. "Students are expected to attend all
regularly scheduled classes at the University for which they are
registered...faculty members are allowed to drop students who are absent
from the first two class meetings and have failed to make special
arrangements with the instructor. However, students should be aware that
non-attendance is not a means of automatically dropping a course..."
Coursework From Another Institution
Students planning to take courses at another school to transfer back to
their University of Massachusetts record are urged to complete a Prior
Approval Form BEFORE undertaking the course work. That form is available,
with the pamphlet "Quick Tips: A Guide for Selecting Transferable
Courses," at the Registrar's Office and all undergraduate
deans’ offices. The "Quick Tips" guide should be reviewed
carefully before the course work is attempted, as it describes which
courses can be transferred from other schools and counted toward a degree
program at the University.
Note: Seniors planning to take transfer courses to complete their
University degree (i.e., seniors not planning to return to the University
after attending another school) must complete the Senior Prior Approval
Form, available from the Registrar’s Office, instead of the
standard form, and should be sure the courses they plan to take meet the
transfer standards described in the "Quick Tips" guide.
The "Quick Tips" guide is available through the Web on our Transfer
Credit page.
