Final Examination Policy
Final Examinations may be scheduled only during the final examination period. In classes in which no final examination or other class activity is scheduled during the final examination period, no examination should be scheduled during the final week of classes nor during the Reading Period. If an instructor in a course without a final examination wishes to give an hour examination to cover the material in the concluding section of the course, that hour examination shall be held during the final examination period, at the time that the final examination for the course would have been scheduled. Non-cumulative exams may be scheduled during the last week of classes only in classes in which an additional final exam is scheduled during the final examination period. Laboratory and studio courses that include a capstone experiment or a culminating presentation, respectively, during the last week of classes, are allowed to schedule a comprehensive final examination during the Final Examinations Week. This policy applies to both undergraduate and graduate courses.
University policy states that if a student is scheduled to take two final exams at the same time, the faculty member running the course with the higher final digit in the class number shall be required to offer a make-up exam. Further, if a student is scheduled to take three final examinations on the same day, the faculty member running the chronologically middle exam shall be required to offer a make-up exam. Proof of conflict shall be provided to the instructor by the student at least two weeks prior to the time the examination is scheduled. Proof may be obtained at the Registrar's Office, 213 Whitmore.
University policy and Massachusetts state law require faculty to offer make-up exams to students who are absent for religious observance. Students planning to be absent due to religious observance must notify their instructors at least two weeks prior to the time the examination is scheduled.
In the unlikely event of a delayed opening or official closing of the University during the final exam period, please refer to the Housing Services Cable News Network, the University Emergency Closing Web page, or a paper copy of the instructions titled "Rescheduling Of Final Exams On Official Snow Days" which is widely distributed several weeks before the final exam period.
Important Notes
Students enrolled in courses with conflicting scheduled exams or who have three or more exams scheduled in one calendar day should contact the Registrar's Office for assistance in resolving the problem.
When it becomes available, the full final exam schedule is published right here on the Registrar's Web site. Each student's own final exam schedule is also available to him/her through SPIRE. To view it, log in to SPIRE and select "For Students," then "Academic Summary," then "Exam Schedule."
The exam schedule occasionally has to be updated after publication to accommodate unique scheduling situations. In these cases, the Registrar's web site and SPIRE will be updated to reflect the most up to date information.
