B3: Examining Placement Decisions for First Year Writing Courses: Two Validation Inquiries

Description: This panel will examine three different approaches to validating first-year writing placement practices to illustrate the multi-modal demands of validation inquiry. Paper one discusses students' perceptions of placement testing when they believe they have been placed in the wrong course. Paper two examines the contexts that influence readers' judgments about placement. Paper three examines the performance of students who choose to take a course other than the one recommended by placement testing.
