Description: Increasingly, writing teachers are discovering the value of asking students to use new technologies to create texts that integrate visual and verbal information. But since most teachers of writing have, at best, a limited background in visual communication, assessing students' work with visuals can be a challenge.
Drawing on samples of different types of student work, presenters at this session will briefly explain several principles of visual communication and then show how basic concepts (especially the given/new contract and accessibility) can allow teachers to assess visual elements of students' compositions in ways that also apply to conventional print texts.
