Description: The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is engaged in a statewide project to establish performance standards for writing. The presentation will show how publishing samples of student writing that demonstrate what it means to "meet or exceed state standards" can improve writing instruction and may increase the quality and the level of student engagement with writing. In addition to presenting the details of the project and lessons learned in the process, we will discuss the significant implications it holds for assessment and instruction and offer suggestions on how classroom teachers and college faculty may use the project.
