NEW COURSE!!!!

Understanding and Teaching Division and Fractions

In order to satisfy the requirements of the Massachusetts Mathematics Curriculum Frameworks, teachers themselves have to understand mathematical topics well enough and deeply enough to design successful lessons for their students. Students need both procedural understanding (e.g. the steps of long division), as well as conceptual understanding (e.g. why dividing by 0 is illegal).

Participants in this course will acquire mastery level skills, and an in-depth understanding of the topics of division and fractions, through hands-on exploration and discovery. Lessons will take place in a relaxing collegial atmosphere, and will incorporate a chance for participants to develop relevant lessons for their own classrooms.

The course is designed to strengthen content knowledge of the Massachusetts Mathematics Curriculum Frameworks as detailed in subsections of Number Sense and Operation.

3 graduate credit option available through continuing education at the Westfield State College at a cost of $285. Teachers can receive 67.5 PDPs for this course if not taken for credit.

Eligibility requirement:  teachers in Massachusetts schools; priority given to teachers in high needs school districts.

Instructors: Aniko Giordono (Adjunct Professor – WSC), and a public school teacher yet to be named

Dates: July 20-23, 2009; July 27-30, 2009
Location: Westfield State College – Wilson Room 416

An Integrated Approach to Physics and Mathematics for Middle School Teachers

This course focuses on concepts of force, motion, work and power; and forms of energy (mechanical, heat, electrical and magnetic) and energy transformations.  This course uses algebra, statistics and trigonometry as problem solving tools. It will provide teachers enrolled in the course with methods and representations of the physical science (Physics) and mathematics knowledge that they can then use with their students.
Stipend of $800 for course participation payable upon completion of the follow-up classes.

Graduate 3 credit option available through continuing education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Teachers can also receive 67.5 PDPs for this course and an additional 20 PDPs for the follow-up.
This course has 4 required follow-up sessions during the 2008-09 academic year that must be completed in order to receive the $800 stipend .

Instructors: Dr. Fides Ushe and Dr. Zenobia Lojewska (Springfield College)
Co-instructor: Milton Barnes (Springfield College)

Discrete Mathematics for Middle School Teachers   (EDUC 615AM)

This course combines the teaching of mathematics pedagogy with the content of discrete mathematics. The course will be taught using the same pedagogical methods as those used to teach the students.  It will be consistent with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards and the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.  The history of mathematics will be integrated into the course by placing selected topics in their historical context. We will integrate technology into the course through the use of graphing calculators such as the TI-83 and, if time permits, mathematical computer software such as Maple or Mathematica.
Stipend of $800 for course participation payable upon completion of the follow-up classes.

Graduate 3 credit option available through continuing education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Teachers can also receive 67.5 PDPs for this course and an additional 20 PDPs for the follow-up.

Robotics for Middle School Teachers

This course will provide middle school teachers with hands-on experience in robotics.  The course will focus on developing an understanding of robotics as a basis for teaching programming and mechanical design.  Systematic problem-solving will also be emphasized.  The course format will be split between lecture-based discussion of concepts and guided exercises.  During the guided exercises, participants will work in teams of two or three on specific tasks with actual robots.  This course will be taught at an introductory level, and it will be assumed that participants have no prior knowledge of programming, engineering or robotics.
Stipend of $800 for course participation payable upon completion of the follow-up classes.

Graduate 3 credit option available through continuing education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Teachers can also receive 67.5 PDPs for this course and an additional 20 PDPs for the follow-up.
