n an effort to expand services available to students
and staff, the Lincoln Campus Center/Student Union complex added a
Federal Express branch in the former location of the Print Shop early
in April. "This
is going to be a major pick-up point for students receiving packages,"
said Meredith Schmidt, director of the complex. "Within 15
minutes of the opening, we had people down here to get deliveries."
Because the University
had to close the post office, Schmidt and her colleagues had been
looking for a way for students to be able to send and receive packages.
"We wanted to
provide some sort of shipping service for the community," she
said. "We put a [call for a ] bid out to all the major shipping
companies."
Even with a stationary
presence on campus, Federal Express will still continue to make
direct deliveries to faculty and staff, but it will no longer deliver
to the dormitories, Schmidt said.
Federal Express is
notifying students by e-mail or telephone when packages arrive for
them and then holding the packages at its campus office, according
to Jim Langone, manager of the Hatfield facility for the company.
"It was operationally
difficult, so we stopped delivering to the dormitories," he
said. "With a permanent facility, a fully staffed location,
it can be designated as a delivery spot."
The office is open
8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday but will be closed on
any University holiday, Langone said. |
