Football and field hockey coaches featured at Sports Luncheon

Head football coach Mark Whipple, defensive coordinator Tom Mascella and field hockey coach Patty Shea will be the featured speakers at the Weekly Sports Luncheon on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at noon under the tent at McGuirk Alumni Stadium.

The buffet lunch costs $6.50. Call 5-4289 for reservations.

Photographic Services relocates to Munson Hall

All Photographic Services business, including work orders, pickups and deliveries, are now handled in the main office of Creative Services, 101 Munson Hall (5-2298). Business hours are 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays.

All current services are offered, with the exception of E-6 film processing. Slide production, copy, duplicating and studio work and PowerPoint slides are available on a five-working day turnaround.

Body Shop opens for full workouts Sept. 16

The Body Shop Exercise Center, directed by the Department of Exercise Science, will open for full workouts on Monday, Sept. 16.

The 8 Totman Gym location is open through Sept. 13 at selected times for viewing and purchasing memberships.

Qualified staff will supervise during all open hours. Personal trainers are available for a fee to help members with exercise programs.

Until Sept. 13, the fall membership price is $65 and $110 for both fall and spring. After Sept. 16, the price for the full fall membership will be $70 and $120 for the full fall and spring. Memberships can be purchased at anytime during the year.

The center's hours will be Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. with weekend hours still to be arranged. The Body Shop Exercise Center is available to all UMass Amherst campus-affiliated students (including students enrolled in the Five College program), faculty, retired faculty, alumni, staff and family members of the preceding groups over 18 years of age.

A full membership includes unlimited use of either facility which contains exercise equipment such as Lifestep Stair-climbers and stationary bicycles, Concept II rowers, NordicTrack Club 900 cross-country skiers, a Precor EFX Elliptical Trainer, weight training machines and free weights.

A full refund policy is in effect for 14 days after signup. The original receipt and new campus ID must accompany any refund request. For any additional information, call 5-0624.

Retirement reception for Sarah Boy

A retirement reception in honor of Sarah Boy, associate to the vice chancellor for Student Affairs, will be held Wednesday, Sept. 18, 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the University Club. A cash bar will be available.

All friends and associates are invited to attend. Contributions towards a gift may be sent to Deb Amos, 319 Whitmore Administration Building (5-2333).

Stonewall Center hosts welcomes for Five College students

The Stonewall Center, a lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender educational resource center, is planning several events to welcome new and returning students back to the area.

The center's annual open house will be held on Monday, Sept. 9, 4-6 p.m. in Crampton House in Southwest. Munchies and beverages will be available.

A graduate student reception with snacks and drinks will be held on Thursday, Sept. 12, 4-6 p.m. at the center.

The fourth annual ALANA barbecue will be held Tuesday, Sept. 24, 4:30-6:30 outside the center. ALANA students and their allies are welcome to attend, but should RSVP by calling 5-4824 to specify any dietary needs.

None of the events are wheelchair accessible.

Spring course proposals due

Departmental course proposals and scheduling materials for spring 2003 should be submitted to the Academic Scheduling Office by Friday, Sept. 6.

Presentation for new faculty on sponsored research

Interim Vice Chancellor for Research Frederick W. Byron, Jr. invites all new faculty to attend a luncheon presentation entitled "Introduction to Sponsored Research Services and Resources" on Friday, Sept. 27 from noon to 2 p.m. in room 1001-02 Lincoln Campus Center.

Each year, Bruce McCandless, director of the Office of Research Affairs, presents the program intended to outline the "lay of the land" regarding sponsored research activities on campus.

Final exam requirements

Departments should submit final examination requirements for this semester to the Academic Scheduling Office by Friday, Sept. 6.

Blood drive

The Hampshire County Chapter of the American Red Cross will conduct a blood drive on Monday, Sept. 9, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., in 174 Lincoln Campus Center.

Vanpools to UMass

The UMass Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) is partnering with Caravan for Commuters to help form vanpools to the campus.

If you are interested in riding in a van-pool, contact the TAP coordinator at 5-6585 or by e-mail (rideshare@admin.umass.edu). TAP is designed to meet a Department of Environmental Protection mandate to reduce the number of single occupancy vehicles commuting to UMass.

Joint exam requests

The last day for departments to submit requests to the Academic Scheduling Office for clearance of joint evening examination dates for this semester is Friday, Sept. 6.

Kaffeepause

The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures is offering a Kaffeepause on Wednesday, Sept. 11, noon-2 p.m. in the fifth floor lobby of Herter Hall. All are welcome to join in German conversation and enjoy free coffee and snacks.

LRC resources available online

Although the Foreign Language Resource Center has closed, a simplified version of its Web site (www.umass.edu/langctr) is still available. The site features links to language related sites and resources, including the online versions of the audio materials for several language textbooks (www.umass.edu/langctr/online/audio.html). The site has been well used with more than 8,000 visits in three semesters, says former FLRC director Irene Starr.

Most of the center's video collection was sent to the relevant language departments with a few titles to Linguistics. A popular ESL video set, "Family Album," is at the reserve desk of the Du Bois Library. Links to a searchable catalog and a title list are available on the center Web site.

Most equipment stayed in 19 Herter Hall, which now houses the Translation
Center.

Human Resources Information Center adds office hours

To accommodate an increase in customers, the Human Resources Information Center on the third floor of Whitmore is open between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. through Friday, Sept. 27.

Effective Monday, Sept. 30, the information center will return to its schedule of 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Memorial service for Leo Redfern

A memorial service for former administrator Leo F. Redfern will be held Friday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. in the Alumni Recital Hall of the Redfern Arts Center at Keene State College in New Hampshire.

Redfern, who died in a May 31 car accident, held a number of posts, including director of Institutional Studies, acting University secretary and dean of Administration, during nearly eight years at UMass.
