Obituaries

Shirley M. Carson

Shirley M. Carson, 79, of the Millers Falls section of Montague, a retired cook III in Auxiliary Services, died April 12 at home.

She served the University for more than 28 and a half years before retiring in 1989.

Her husband, Richard A. Carson, died in 1975, and a son, Daniel R., died in 1972.

She leaves two sons, Robert of Greenfield and Andrew, with whom she lived; two daughters, Geri Sakowicz of Athol and Cindy Lueders of Greenfield; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Norman L. Hathaway

Norman L. Hathaway, 77, of Hadley, a retired professional technician II at the Power Plant, died April 12.

He served the University for 33 years before retiring in 1985. He previously had worked for the Wrentham State School as an engineer for 23 years.

He served in the 34th Division of the 5th Army in Africa and Italy during World War II. After attaining a discharge with a rank of sergeant, he re-enlisted with military intelligence overseas, where he worked through 1947.

He was a member of the National Association of Power Engineers.
His wife, Crystal Hathaway, died in 1974.

He leaves two sons, Thomas F. of Whitman and Norman G. of North Carolina; a sister, Dorothy Parker of Dothan, Ala.; a close friend, Hermine Randall of South Hadley, also a retired University employee; two grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

Winfred L.Woodard Jr.

Winfred L. Woodard Jr., 85, of Leverett, a retired janitor in the Lincoln Campus Center, died April 9 at home.

He served the University for more than 13 years before retiring in 1983.

He leaves his wife, the former Eleanor M. Shaw; three sons, John of Portland, Ore., Fred of Midland Park, N.J., and the Rev. Timothy L. of Middletown, N.J.; three daughters, Lois Swanson of Hyannis, Margaret Walters of New Hampshire and Judith M. Beaufard of Waterbury, Conn.; three step-children, Robert P. Tidlund of Montague, Christin Allen of Leverett and Ernest J. Tidlund III of Shutesbury; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Shirley M. Demarest

Shirley M. Demarest, 77, of Reston, Va., a retired Library assistant I, died March 25 of complications of pulmonary fibrosis.

She served the University for 18 years before retiring in 1990.

Her former husband, Robert Demarest, died in 1989.

She leaves a daughter, Penny Doan, of Reston; two sons, Chris of Lebanon, N.H., and Peter of Minneapolis; two sisters and five grandchildren.
