MSP general assembly set for April 23
A general assembly of the Massachusetts Society
of Professors will be held Tuesday, April 23, 4-5 p.m. in 803
Lincoln Campus Center.
Agenda items include nominations for board members
and officers, FY2003 budgets for the Joint Coordinating Committee
and MSP and new business.
Elections of board members and officers are scheduled for Tuesday,
April 30, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the MSP office, 121 Hampshire House.
Reception for Leo St. Denis
A reception is being held Tuesday, April 30 for
Printing Services manager Leo St. Denis, who is retiring from
the University after 36 years of service.
The reception is scheduled for 2:30-5 p.m. in the
Massachusetts Room in the Mullins Center.

Weight Watcher's meetings
The Weight Watcher's Winning Points Program meetings
are held each Monday at noon in 253 Boyden. Call Cheryl (548-9404)

Al-Anon meetings
Al-Anon meetings are held on Mondays and Thursdays
from noon-
1 p.m. in Lincoln Campus Center. Check the daily listings near
the elevators for the room number.
Retirement party for CFNR associate deans
The College of Food and Natural Resources is planning
a reception for associate deans Jim Marcum and Mark Mount, who
are retiring. The event is scheduled for Thursday, May 16, 3-5
p.m. in the Massachusetts Room at the Mullins Center. Those planning
to attend are asked to RSVP by May 9 to Susan Denis at 5-1969.
A book of letters is being created for each associate
dean. Letters, anecdotes, poems and funny stories can be sent
to the appropriate person as follows:

For Jim Marcum, send items to Martha Baker, Academic
Programs, 111 Stockbridge Hall.
Adopt-a-Planter registrations due April 19
Members of the University community interested in
cultivating and maintaining a planter this summer must register
by Friday, April 19.
Forms can be obtained by contacting Pam Monn, manager
of Landscape and Construction Services, at 7-3106. Participants
will need to identify the location of the planter desired and,
if a group is involved, the names of all participants, including
contact information for the team's lead person. Every effort will
be made to accommodate requests for choice of planter.
Planters must be cleared and ready for planting
Monday, April 29.
Certificates for $40 of plant material from the
Hadley Garden Center will be provided for each planter. Grounds
Management will provide two buckets of bark mulch per planter.
In addition, each participant will receive a coupon for a five-gallon
bucket of UMass compost, available for pick-up at the Intermediate
Processing Facility at Tillson Farm. The certificates will be
available from Barbara Pitoniak, News Office (5-0444), Munson
Hall, after April 29.
Three $50 gift certificates to Fitzwilly's or the
Union Station restaurants (Union Station, The Deck, The Tunnel
Bar, and Spaghetti Freddy's) in Northampton will be awarded to
the planters that are the best maintained and display the most
creativity. The three planters will be selected for recognition
in mid-summer.
All planters must be planted by Monday, May 20.
Participants may plant annuals, perennials, small shrubbery, and
grasses, and are responsible for planting and maintaining (including
watering) the planters.
Stonewall Center presents 'Ex Post Papa'
Local writer, performer and activist Bear brings
her solo production of "Ex Post Papa: Life as a Freelance
Dyke Dad" to campus this week for two shows.
Directed by Morgan Sheehan-Bubla, "Ex Post
Papa" explores queer community mentoring through Bear's autobiographical
narrative of her years of guiding younger or less experienced
people as they come out. The work was commissioned by the Stonewall
Center and the UMass Arts Council.
Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. on Friday,
April 19 and Saturday, April 20 in 227 Herter Hall. Admission
is $5 general public and $3 for students and low-income patrons.

Track coaches to speak at Sports Luncheon
Men's and women's track coaches Ken O'Brien and
Julie LaFreniere will be the featured speakers at the Weekly Sports
Luncheon on Wednesday, April 24 at noon in the Top of the Campus.
The buffet lunch costs $6.50. Call 5-4289 for reservations.
Female runners needed for stress fracture
study
Women between the ages 18-40 who run at least 25
miles per week are needed for a research study being conducted
in the Department of Exercise Science.
A biomechanical assessment as well as a structural
evaluation (by a physical therapist) will be performed on each
runner. A tibial X-ray will also be performed at University Health
Services.
There is a two-hour time commitment plus time for
the X-ray session. Each subject will receive $50 for participating
in the study.

Radical Student Union screens documentaries
Street-level protests are the theme of next week's
documentary screening by the Radical Student Union.
The group will show "A Year in the Streets,"
a video release from the Cascadia Media Collective, "The
New Kids on the Black Block," and protest footage from campus.
Screening are scheduled for Monday, April 22 in
805-09 Lincoln Campus Center and Tuesday, April 23 and Wednesday,
April 24, both in 911 Campus Center. All shows begin at 7 p.m.
A discussion follows each screening.
Parking hours restored
Parking Services has returned to regular hours of
parking enforcement, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Valid UMass parking permits are required in all
parking lots, except visitor meter lots, which are enforced for
payment 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Vehicles may park in any legal parking
space, provided it is not a tow zone, handicapped space, vendor
space, state vehicle space, reserved space, or 24-hour permit
required lot (lots 21, 22, 29, 35, 44, 47, 49, 50, 54, 67, North
Village Apts. and Lincoln Apts.), from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m., Monday
through Friday, weekends and holidays, without displaying the
proper permit.
Parking meters will continue to be enforced for
payment 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Mother Earth Day celebration
A celebration of Mother Earth Day, Monday, April
22 (rain date April 23) is scheduled for the Student Union lawn.
A free concert will be presented from 5-10 p.m.,
by the Wakebylake Singers, Timeship Earth, World Beat Ensemble,
Henry Geddes, Kate Marks, Doug Johnson, and others. Speakers will
include a representative of the Kogi Indians of Colombia, Peter
Champoux, author of "Gaia Matrix", The Leonard Peltier
Support Group, The Native American Students Association, The Radical
Students Union, and The Connecticut River Valley Greens.
This event is co-sponsored by the First Aid/First
Nations Coalition and the Connecticut River Valley Greens and
is dedicated to Leonard Peltier. Organizers say funds raised will
benefit the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee and Native American
programming on campus.
April 25 Faculty Senate meeting canceled
The Faculty Senate meeting scheduled for April 25
has been canceled. However, an additional meeting has been set
for Thursday, May 16 at 3:30 p.m. in 116 Isenberg School of Management.
Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology seminar
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology
at the Medical School is hosting the following talk on Wednesday,
April 24:
"Mechanism of Prion Formation and Propagation:
Lessons from a Yeast Prion" with Jonathan Weissman, Howard
Hughes Medical Institute and the department of cellular and molecular
pharmacology at UCal, San Francisco.
The talk begins at noon in S1-608 Hiatt Auditorium, Goff Center.
Totman Pool closed
The swimming pool in Totman Gym has closed for repairs,
and recreation hours have been moved to Boyden and Hicks pool.

Undergraduate commencement volunteers needed
Volunteer marshals, aides, and ushers are needed
for the 2002 Undergraduate Commencement on Sunday, May 26. Returning
veterans and new volunteers are encouraged to participate.
Volunteers help to manage approximately 4,000 graduates
and 22,000 guests. Approximately 60 marshals, 50 aides, and 30
ushers are needed.
Marshals assist by organizing graduates according
to their appropriate school or college for the student processional,
escorting graduates on to the field, and serving as field monitors.
Aides greet guests as they enter the perimeter, distribute programs,
and help guests locate seating and other services. Ushers assist
guests in the stands of the stadium with seating, directions,
and program information.
Orientation for volunteers is scheduled for 10 a.m.
Thursday, May 16, in Mahar Auditorium. A volunteer rehearsal is
scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, May 24 at the stadium. On the day
of commencement, volunteers should be at the stadium no later
than 8:30 a.m. Following the commencement ceremony, at noon, volunteers
will be transported to Rafters for a complimentary thank you luncheon.

Turf fertilization and weed control program
As part of its turf management program, the Physical
Plant Landscape Services Department will be applying fertilizer
and broadleaf weed control. This application will occur sometime
during the last half of April based on weather conditions.
Treated areas will be posted for approximately 72
hours.
