Major promotion
After nearly 17 years of active duty service, professor
of Military Science Bernd Schliemann was promoted to lieutenant
colonel in a campus ceremony April 1. Colonel J.C. Allard, commander
of the 1st Region for Army ROTC and 1st Brigade, presided over
the ceremony, which was attended by Schliemann's wife, children
and father, interim Chancellor Marcellette G. Williams, interim
Provost Charlena Seymour, and other members of the University
and Amherst communities. Schliemann has served in Germany, Korea,
Desert Storm, Colorado, West Point, and North Carolina; he has
a master's de-gree in industrial engineering from the Georgia
Insitute of Technology and is a registered professional engineer
in Virginia.
Stratford-on-Avon calling
The Odyssey Bookshop in South Hadley is hosting
a reading and booksigning with English professor
Richard Burt, editor of the newly published "Shake-speare
After Mass Media," on April 17 at 7 p.m. The book examines
the Bard's plays in a wide range of media, including comics, romance
novels, "Star Trek," movies, radio ads and popular music.
The book is published by St. Martin's Press and is available in
hardcover and paperback editions.
Appointment book
Stella Lucia Volpe, associate professor of Nutrition,
has been appointed to the Institute of Medicine's Dietary Reference
Intake Panel for Electrolytes and Water. The committee will determine
the intakes needed for electrolytes and water for the United States.
Volpe's appointment runs through March 2003. Volpe, incidentally,
is on sabbatical this semester. She's spending her leave working
in labs in Philadelphia, England and Italy.
Beetle-mania
Jian-Rong Gao, a postdoctoral researcher in
the Entomology Department,and Kansas State University professor
Kun Yan Zhu present their research on the resistance to pesticides
of certain insects at the national meeting of the American Chemical
Society held April 7-11 in Orlando, Fla. Zhu and Entomology professor
J. Marshall Clark have co-authored several papers on pesticide
resistance among insects.
