MSP general assembly set for April 23
A general assembly of the Massachusetts Society
of Professors will be held Tuesday, April 23, 4-5 p.m. in 803
Lincoln Campus Center.
Agenda items include nominations for board members
and officers, FY2003 budgets for the Joint Coordinating Committee
and MSP, and new business.
Elections of board members and officers are scheduled for Tuesday,
April 30, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the MSP office, 121 Hampshire House.
Pension Reserve Investment Management Board elections
Balloting is underway for a seat on the state Pension
Reserve Investment Management Board. Ballots and candidate information
were mailed to eligible employees at their home addresses.
Five candidates are vying for the seat: Reid J.
Cassidy, an 18-year probation officer; William (Bill) Wright,
a staff member of the state Lottery Commission; Carol Parad Kurzman,
manager of human resources for the state Department of Housing
and Community Development; Ralph White, who has held the seat
for 18 years; and William (Bill) Barabino, a Department of Mental
Retardation employee.
Ballots must be received by May 3.
Patriot's Day observed
Patriot's Day will be observed as a state holiday
on Monday, April 15. Most University offices will be closed.
Monday class schedule
Due to the observance of Patriot's Day on April
15, a Monday class schedule will be followed on Wednesday, April
17.
Subjects needed for aerobic exercise research
The Exercise Science Department is looking for subjects
to participate in a five-day training study looking at the effects
of aerobic exercise on carbohydrate and fat metabolism. Non-smoking
women ages 18-44 who do not exercise but want to start and lose
weight are eligible.
Participants receive $100 compensation plus fitness
testing, a state-of-the-art bone density scan, nutritional analysis,
and body fat analysis.
Spots are open in April, May and June. For information,

Al-Anon meetings
Al-Anon meetings are held on Mondays and Thursdays
from noon-1 p.m. in Lincoln Campus Center. Check the daily listings
near the elevators for the room number.
Subjects needed for aging and muscle function study
The Muscle Physiology Laboratory is looking for
men and women between the ages of 65 and 85 to participate in
a study of aging and muscle function. Individuals in good health
and free from disease that may affect muscle function are eligible
to participate. Financial compensation will be provided for those
who complete the study.

Exercise Science graduate seminar on April 17
William J. Kraemer, of the department of kinesiology
at the University of
Connecticut, will present a seminar on "Physiology of Resistance
Exercise: Implications for Exercise Prescription" on Wednesday,
April 17, 12:20 p.m. in 153 Totman.
Lacrosse, baseball coaches speak at Sports Luncheon
Baseball coach Mike Stone and men's lacrosse coach
Greg Cannella will be the featured speakers at the Weekly Sports
Luncheon on Wednesday, April 17 at noon in the Top of the Campus.

MSBDC workshops
The Western Massachusetts Regional Office of the
Massachusetts Small Business Development Center Network (MSBDC)
is presenting workshops on marketing and first business plans
next week.
"Marketing Basics," will be led by MSBDC
regional director Dianne Fuller Doherty on Wednesday, April 17,
2-5 p.m. at the Greater Northampton Chamber of Commerce, 99 Pleasant
St., Northampton. The workshop will focus on the basic disciplines
of marketing, particulalry developing and keeping a customer.
Allen Kronick, senior management counselor with
MSBDC, will present "Your First Business Plan" on Tuesday,
April 16, 9-11 a.m. at the Quaboag Valley Chamber of Commerce,
3 Converse St., Palmer. The workshop is recommended for start-up
businesses and will focus on business fundamentals, from start-up
considerations to the elements of a business or financial plan.
Reservations are required and the registration fee

Weight Watcher's meetings
The Weight Watcher's Winning Points Program meetings
are held each Monday at noon in 253 Boyden. Call Cheryl (548-9404)

Molecular Genetics and Microbiology seminars
The Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology
at the Medical School is hosting the following talks: "Translational
Control by Upstream Open Reading Frames in mRNA" with Michael
Sachs, Oregon Health Sciences University, Friday, April 12.
"Mechanism of Viral Persistence in HIV Infection;
Basic and Clinical Implications" with Michael Sliciano, Johns
Hopkins School of Medicine, Friday, April 19.
Both sessions begin at 12:15 p.m. in S5-310 of the
Medical School.
Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology seminar
Peter B. Moore, the Eugene Higgins Professor of
Chemistry at Yale University, will discuss "Structure and
Function of the Large Ribosomal Subunit" on Wednesday, April
17 at 3 p.m. in S1-608 Hiatt Auditorium of the Goff Learning Center
at the Medical School in Worcester.
Reception for Leo St. Denis
A reception is being held Tuesday, April 30 for
Printing Services manager Leo St. Denis, who is retiring from
the University after 36 years of service.
The reception is scheduled for 2:30-5 p.m. in the Massachusetts
Room in the Mullins Center.

Attorney lectures on 'New Face of the Death Penalty'
Attorney Robert Meeropol, executive director of
the Rosenberg Fund for Children, will give a public lecture titled
"Capital Conspiracy: The New Face of the Death Penalty After
9/11" on Wednesday, April 17 at 7 p.m. in 134 Hasbrouck Lab.
Meeropol is the son of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg,
who were executed in 1953 for conspiracy to commit espionage.
The event is sponsored by the Writing Program, Commonwealth
College, Graduate Employee Organization and the Western MA American
Friends Service Committee.
Totman Pool closed
The swimming pool in Totman Gym has closed for repairs,
and recreation hours have been moved to Boyden and Hicks pools.

Parking hours restored
Parking Services this week returned to regular hours
of parking enforcement, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Valid UMass parking permits are required in all
parking lots, except visitor meter lots, which are enforced for
payment 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Vehicles may park in any legal parking
space, provided it is not a tow zone, handicapped space, vendor
space, state vehicle space, reserved space, or 24-hour permit
required lot (lots 21, 22, 29, 35, 44, 47, 49, 50, 54, 67, North
Village Apts. and Lincoln Apts.), from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m., Monday
through Friday, weekends and holidays, without displaying the
proper permit.
Parking meters will continue to be enforced for
payment 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
Turf fertilization and weed control program
As part of its turf management program, the Physical
Plant Landscape Services Department will be applying fertilizer
and broadleaf weed control. This application will occur sometime
during the last half of April based on weather conditions. Treated
areas will be posted for approximately 72 hours.

Retirement party for CFNR associate deans
The College of Food and Natural Resources is planning
a reception for associate deans Jim Marcum and Mark Mount, who
are retiring. The event is scheduled for Thursday, May 16, 3-5
p.m. in the Massachusetts Room at the Mullins Center. Those planning
to attend are asked to RSVP by May 9 to Susan Denis at 5-1969.
A book of letters is being created for each associate
dean. Letters, anecdotes, poems and funny stories can be contributed
as follows:

Documentary on U.S. foreign policy screened
The Radical Student Union is screening the documentary
"What I've Learned About Foreign Policy," on Tuesday,
April 16 at 7 p.m. in 911 Lincoln Campus Center.
A second showing is scheduled for Wednesday, April
17 at 7 p.m. in the same location.
The screening is free and open to all. A discussion
will follow.
