Forum discusses awareness of developmental
disabilities
Increasing public awareness and understanding of
developmental disabilities is the focus of an upcoming half-day
forum sponsored by the University Outreach, University Without
Walls and the state Department of Mental Retardation.
Scheduled for Wednesday, April 3, from 9 a.m. to
noon in 803 Lincoln Campus Center, the forum "Community Education
on Developmental Disabilities" will feature speakers from
several regional agencies that assist developmentally disabled
individuals. Forum participants will discuss the objectives of
community education, strategies for achieving the objectives and
how to evaluate success.
The event is free and open to the public and advance

Pre-registration begins April 8
All faculty and advisors are asked to remind undergraduates
in their classes and departments that pre-registration for fall
2002 courses will take place between Monday, April 8 and Friday,
April 19. Invitations to pre-register will be mailed out to students
in early April.
Pre-registration guides can be picked up beginning
Thursday, April 4 in the second floor lobby of Whitmore.
Pre-Major Advising Services recommends that students
make appointments to meet with their advisors early to avoid the
counseling week crunch.
Queer Cafe
The Stonewall Center is hosting its Quintessentially
Queer Cafe on Thursday, April 4 at 7 p.m. in the Graduate Student
Lounge in the Lincoln Campus Center. Queer poets and musicians
from the Five College area will be featured at the open mic event.

Memorial ceremony for Barbara B. Burn
A memorial celebrating the life and achievements
of the late Barbara B. Burn, associate provost for International
Programs, will be held Monday, April 1 at 1 p.m. in Bowker Auditorium.
Burn died at her home on Feb. 24 at the age of 76.
Following the ceremony, a reception will be held
in the Lincoln Campus Center. Parking for both the ceremony and
reception is available in the Campus Center Garage.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Barbara

Arts Extension workshops
The Arts Extension Service in the Division of Continuing
Education is offering a series of free workshops for artists who
want to learn more about the business of being an artist. The
sessions will be held each Thursday in April from 4:30-6 p.m.
at 358 North Pleasant St.
Space is limited and pre-registration is required.
The series, which is co-sponsored by the UMass Arts
Council, begins April 4 with "Marketing for Artists"
with visual artist Nora Valdez, gallery director Anne LaPrade
and Shirley Sneve of Arts Extension.
"Legal Stuff for Artists" will be presented
April 11 by entertainment and copyright attorney Paul Rapp of
Albany, N.Y.
Martha Richards of the Fund for Women Artists and
Stella Aguirre McGregor and Kelly Bennett of the Massachusetts
Cultural Council will discuss funding, fellowship and residency
opportunities in "Money for Artists on April 18.
The workshops conclude April 25 with "Jobs
for Artists," featuring musician and arts educator Tony Vacca
and art therapist Laura Seftel.

Blood drive
The American Red Cross is conducting a blood drive
on Monday, April 1, 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in 174 Lincoln Campus
Center.
Aging and muscle function study
The Muscle Physiology Laboratory is looking for
men and women between the ages of 65 and 85 to participate in
a study of aging and muscle function. Individuals in good health
and free from disease that may affect muscle function are eligible
to participate. Financial compensation will be provided for those
who complete the study.

Jewish Heritage videos available for use
The 200 videos in the Jewish Heritage Video Collection,
a project of the Jewish Media Fund, are now available for use
at the Foreign Language Resource Center, 19 Herter Hall.
The collection brings together a carefully selected
group of films and television programs - including features and
documentaries, American and foreign productions - with significant
Jewish content and interest. Tapes are available in seven categories:
child-ren's, comedy, Holocaust, international Jewry, Israel, Jewish
experience in America, religion and identity.

Want to start an exercise program?
The Department of Exercise Science is conducting
a short-term exercise training study. Non-smoking women between
the ages of 18-45 who do not exercise regularly are eligible to
participate.
Participants will receive a bone density scan, body
fat analysis, a blood-sugar profile, fitness assessment, and a
customized long-term exercise program. Participants will also
receive financial compensation up to $75.

Everywoman's Center offers support groups
Several support groups are being offered this semester
by the Every-woman's Center. The sessions are free and open to
women from the Five Colleges and local communities, but pre-registration
is required.
"Creating Self-Esteem" is a four-session
support group for women who wish to improve their self-esteem.
The group begins Monday, April 1.
"Managing Anxiety" is a four-session group
for women who struggle with anxiety daily. Sessions start Thursday,
April 4.

Support group for Latina students
The Everywoman's Center and Bilingual Collegiate
Program are offering an ongoing meeting for Latina students titled
"Somos Otras Las Latinas?" The group is intended to
provide a supportive environment for Latina students to discuss
issues they face as students. The group, which will be conducted
in Spanish, meets Mondays from 5-6:30 p.m. at Wilder Hall.

Reception for Leo St. Denis
A reception is being held Tuesday, April 30 for
Printing Services manager Leo St. Denis, who is retiring from
the University after 36 years of service.
The reception is scheduled for 2:30-5 p.m. in the Massachusetts
Room in the Mullins Center.

Nurse needed for research study at Baystate Medical
Center
A UMass graduate student is looking for an IV nurse
to help with a research study for 2-3 mornings per week for approximately
one month. Compensation is $20 per hour.

The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures
is offering a Kaffeepause on Wednesday, April 3, from noon-2 p.m.
in the fifth floor lobby of Herter Hall. All are welcome to join
in German conversation, a look at recent German television news,
free coffee and snacks.
Barnes, Nitardy speak at Sports Luncheon
Women's lacrosse coach Phil Barnes will discuss
the current season and John Nitardy of Athletic Development will
offer an overview of progress on the planned softball-soccer-track
complex at the Weekly Sports Luncheon on Wednesday, April 3 at
noon in 1009 Lincoln Campus Center.
