Nominations for the Student Employee of the Year
Awards
As part of the campus's continuing effort to encourage
and reward exemplary performance by all of its employees, the
Gerald F. Scanlon Student Employee of the Year Awards are again
being held in conjunction with the Chancellor's Citation Awards.
To be eligible a student must be a matriculated
undergraduate student who is a junior or senior in good academic
standing; employed by the University for at least six months,
and on payroll during the 2001-2002 academic year.
The nomination deadline is April 5. To receive a
nomination form and additional information, contact the Student

MSBDC offers workshop on 'Your First Business Plan'
Dianne Fuller Doherty, regional director of the
Massachusetts Small Business Development Center, will present
a workshop entitled "Your First Business Plan" on Wednesday,
March 20, 2-5 p.m., at the Greater Northampton Chamber of Commerce,
99 Pleasant St., Northampton.
This workshop, recommended for start-up businesses,
will focus on business management fundamentals, from start-up
considerations to business plan development. Topics will include
pre-venture considerations, financing, strategic marketing, and
business planning.
The session is sponsored by the Greater Northampton
Chamber of Commerce and MSBDC.
The registration fee is $25 and reservations are

Retirement reception for Joyce Abel
The campus community is invited to a retirement
reception for Joyce Abel, director of Academic Budget in the Provost's
Office, on Friday, March 15, from 3-5 p.m. in Memorial Hall.

Nursing faculty candidate gives presentation
Cynthia Dakin, R.N. , Ph.D., a candidate for a faculty
position in the School of Nursing, presents her research on "Predictive
Validity of Emergency Department Patients' Self-Efficacy and Outcome
Beliefs Regarding Wound Care" on Monday, March 11, 9-10 a.m.
in 321 Arnold House.
Dakin is an assistant clinical specialist at the
Northeastern University School of Nursing.
Want to start an exercise program?
The Department of Exercise Science is conducting
a short-term exercise training study. Non-smoking women between
the ages of 18-45 are eligible to participate.
Participants will receive a bone density scan, body
fat analysis, a blood-sugar profile, fitness assessment, a customized
long-term exercise program and compensation up to $75.

'DR' deadline
The last day for graduate students to drop courses
with a record of "DR" is Monday, March 11.
Nominations for Feller Award
Nominations for the Siegfried Feller Award for Outstanding
Volunteer Service to the campus libraries are due Friday, March
15.
Established in 1998, the award honors an individual
who has made outstanding volunteer contributions to create awareness
and build support for the libraries. The award is named for the
retired chief bibliographer who guided the creation of the Friends
of the Library and served as the group's secretary-treasurer and
president for more than 25 years.
Nominations should be sent to Friends of the Library,
Du Bois Library, 154 Hicks Way.
Retired Professional Staff schedule meeting
The Retired Professional Staff's next meeting is
Wednesday, March 20 at 10 a.m. in 805-09 Lincoln Campus Center.
The speaker will be John Clobridge, executive director of the
Amherst Senior Center.
Dixon, Heinel and Stone to speak at Sports Luncheon
Tennis coach Judy Dixon, women's water polo coach
Donna Heinel and baseball coach Mike Stone will be the featured
speakers at the Weekly Sports Luncheon on Wednesday, March 13
at noon in 1009 Lincoln Campus Center.
The buffet lunch is $6.50 per person. Call 5-4289

General Education course proposals
General Education course proposals should be submitted
to the Provost's Office by Friday, March 8 to ensure consideration
by the General Education Council during the spring semester.
Employees needed for nutrition study
Professional and classified employees are needed
for a study about how people learn and respond to different nutrition-related
cancer prevention messages. The research is under the direction
of Elena Carbone, assistant professor of Nutrition. Data collected
will only be used for academic research purposes.
Participants will find out what kind of learning
style works best for them, learn about nutrition and cancer prevention,
and receive a $20 gift certificate to Atkins Farm and two learner-tailored
nutrition education messages to keep at the end of the study.
Participants will be asked to complete two telephone
and one in-person interviews. The total time commitment is approximately
1 hour and 40 minutes. Participants must be full-time, professional
or classified UMass Amherst employees who do not work for the
School of Public Health and Health Sciences or any food service
facility; be over 18 years old; have no personal history of cancer
(staff with a family history of cancer are still eligible to participate);
and be able to read and write English.

Bracey speaks to Retired Faculty Association
Professor John H. Bracey, Jr. of the Afro-American
Studies Department discusses "The Influence of African Americans
in American History" at the next meeting of the Retired Faculty
Association on Wednesday, March 13 in 165-169 Lincoln Campus Center.
Bracey will speak following a coffee hour and short
business meeting starting at 10 a.m.
All retired faculty and librarians are invited to
attend.
