Final exam schedules
Final examination schedules for May are being sent
to academic departments for distribution to the faculty on March
12. Copies will be available to on-campus students in their residence
halls and to off-campus students in the Regi-strar's Office, 213
Whitmore, beginning Thursday, March 14.
The schedule will also be available online (www.umass.edu/registrar)
no later than March 1. The information on the Web will be updated
with any changes that are made.
University Women host fashion show and luncheon
The University Women host their annual Fashion Show
and Luncheon on Saturday, March 9 at Hickory Ridge Country Club
in Amherst.
Featuring beautiful clothing from local stores modeled
by members of the University Women, the show is the major fund-raising
event held by the organization. Proceeds support the group's scholarships
offered to local students attending UMass. A raffle of many valuable
prizes is also being held to add to the scholarship funds.
The cost of the luncheon is $18 for members and
$20 for non-members. Raffle tickets are $2 each or 10 for $15.

NxLevel course offered to entrepreneurs
The Western Massachusetts Regional Office of the
Massachusetts Small Business Development Center Network (MSBDC)
and the Springfield Enterprise Center are sponsoring "NxLevel
for Entrepreneurs," a 10-week course, targeted to companies
preparing for significant growth within the next 3-5 years.
The course combines the NxLevel curriculum, guest
speakers and technical assistance from experienced business practitioners
to guide participating companies in developing a plan for growth.
It concludes with a presentation of each company's business plan
to a panel of CEOs, representatives of the investor community,
and strategic planning experts. Enrollment is limited. Applications
will be screened for acceptance on a first-come, first-served
basis. The registration fee is $400.
The course meets Mondays from March 4 to May 6,
5:30-8:30 p.m. in the Upper Double Suite, Springfield Enterprise
Center, 1 Federal St. in Springfield.

'Preserving Your Intellectual Property'
A workshop on "Preserving Your Intellectual
Property" is being presented Wednesday, March 13, 9- 11 a.m.
at the Springfield Enterprise Center, 1 Federal St. in Springfield.
The program is sponsored by the Western Massachusetts Regional
Office of the Massachusetts Small Business Development Center
Network (MSBDC).
Participants will learn the various cost-effective
steps that start-up companies can take to protect or preserve
their intellectual property. Unless such steps are taken, it may
be impossible to protect those assets from being copied later
on, once sales "take off."
The workshop will be presented by Donald S. Holland
and John A. Kramer of Holland & Bonzagni, P.C.
The registration fee is $25 and reservations are

Molecular Genetics and Microbiology seminar
Neal Silverman of the Division of Infectious Disease
and Immunology in the Department of Medicine at the Medical School
speaks on "Relish and JNK, Two Critical Ingredients for the
Insect Immune Response?" on Friday, March 8 at 12:15 p.m.
in the MGM Seminar Room, S5-310 of the Worcester campus.
Subjects need for Exercise Science study
The Exercise Science Department is seeking healthy
males, 60-75 years old, for a study of antioxidant supplementation
and its possible benefits for maintaining the quality of life
during periods of injury, illness or disuse. The research is aimed
at reducing the loss of muscle strength and size through the aging
process.
Participation involves two weeks of non-dominant
hand immobilization in a plaster cast. Participants will be paid
$150.

Kaffeepause
The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures
is offering a Kaffeepause on Wednesday, March 6 from noon-2 p.m.
in the fifth floor lobby of Herter Hall. All are welcome to join
in German conversation and a look at recent German television
news.
General Education course proposals
General Education course proposals should be submitted
to the Provost's Office by Friday, March 8 to ensure consideration
by the General Education Council during the spring semester.
Phi Beta Kappa meeting and dues
The annual meeting of Nu Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa
will be held on Thursday, March 7 at 4 p.m. in 601 Herter Hall.
Agenda items include the election of new members from the classes
of 2002 and 2003 and the election of new officers.
Members will also consider adoption of a version
of the revised bylaws and constitution, as suggested by the national
organization. There will also be a discussion of the current financial
crisis challenging the chapter and the possibility of canceling
of the chapter's preparations for its Commencement induction ceremony
on May 25, according to president David Grose.
The officers are also encouraging all members to
make a special contribution of $15 or more to the chapter's "empty
treasury," says Grose. Checks may be made out to "Phi
Beta Kappa and sent to treasurer Susan Whitbourne, ONSA, 504A
Goodell. Contributions are tax deductible.
New faculty who were elected to the society as undergraduates
are invited to join Nu Chapter by contacting David Grose in the
Classics Department, or secretary Joseph Bartolomeo in the English
Department.
