Obituaries

Susan A. Duffy, Psychology faculty member

Susan A. Duffy, 52, of Amherst, an associate professor in Psychology, died of cancer Feb. 14 at home.

A 1999 nominee for the Distinguished Teaching Award, she served the University for more than six years. She taught previously at Amherst and Mount Holyoke colleges.

A graduate of Radcliffe College, she had a master's degree in education from Harvard and a doctorate from the University of Michigan.

She leaves her husband, Donald L. Fisher, professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering; her mother, Ruth Duffy of Hockessin, Del.; two daughters, Jennifer Duffy Fisher and Annie Duffy Fisher, both of Amherst; and a brother, James of Landenberg, Pa.

Kurt M. Hertzfeld Jr.

Kurt M. Hertzfeld Jr., 57, of Putnam, Conn., director of Human Resources Information Systems at the UMass Medical Center in Worcester and former staff associate in the College of Food and Natural Resources, died Jan. 27 at home.

He served the Amherst campus from 1971 to 1979 as a graduate assistant in the Chancellor's Office, a staff assistant in the Budget Office and a staff associate in the College of Food and Natural Resources.

A veteran of the Army during the Vietnam War, he was a graduate of Hobart and William Smith College in Geneva, N.Y., with an MBA from the School of Business Administration.

After a brief stint at the University of Connecticut, he came to UMass Medical Center in 1981, staying with the center after it split from the University.

He leaves his wife, Patricia Hertzfeld; his father, Kurt Hertzfeld of Amherst; a daughter, Mary King of Ft. Myers, Fla.; a son, Elon C. Hertzfeld of Putnam, Conn.; a stepmother, Dorothy Wiesner Hertzfeld of Amherst; three sisters, a sister-in-law, four grandchildren, two stepsisters, and several nieces and nephews.

Frances E. Manning

Frances E. "Betty" Manning, 84, of Shelburne Falls, a retired senior clerk typist in General Business and Finance, died Feb. 15 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

She served the University for nearly 13 years before retiring in 1980.
She was a 1964 graduate of Greenfield Community College.

A member of the Shelburne Historical Society, she enjoyed international travel, was an avid reader, and knit afghans for the Veterans Administration hospital patients.

She leaves a niece, Toni Ruth Manning of Baltimore, Md.

Susan C. Dezingas

Susan C. Dezingas, 83, of Pelham, a retired institution domestic aide, died Feb. 13 at Farren Care Center in Montague.

She served the University for nearly 12 years before retiring in 1983.
She was educated in Sunderland schools.

She leaves her husband of 52 years, Edward J. Dezingas; a daughter, Susan of Greenfield; and nieces and nephews.
