Student charges going up 4.9% starting next fall
In-state undergraduates on the Amherst campus will pay 4.9 percent more per semester next year than they are paying for the current semester under a plan approved Wednesday by the Board of Trustees.

Parents’ pleas can’t stop child care closing
Alarmed by the administration's plans to shut down child care services, about 55 parents and union leaders raised their concerns with interim Chancellor Marcellette G. Williams during a Feb. 1 meeting in the Lincoln Campus Center.

Faculty concerns to get airing
All faculty and librarians are being invited by the Faculty Senate and the Massachusetts Society of Professors to convene for a special two-hour discussion of common concerns Thursday Feb. 21. The assembly is scheduled for 3-5 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.

McLaughlin named first Armstrong professor
Associate professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering David McLaughlin has been named the Armstrong Professional Development Professor by President William M. Bulger, following approval by the Board of Trustees at its meeting Wednesday at UMass Dartmouth.

Bradley, Geman appointed Distinguished Professors
Geoscientist Raymond Bradley and mathematician Donald Geman were appointed Distinguished Professors on Wednesday following approval by the Board of Trustees at its meeting at the Dartmouth campus.

Legislator to address senate
The Faculty Senate will hear a presentation from state Rep. Stephen Kulik (D-Worthington) on "Massachusetts' Fiscal Outlook and Prospects for Public Higher Education," at its Feb. 14 meeting.

Note to faculty and students: Discuss absences from class
Faced with a steady stream of students seeking notes explaining why they've missed classes, the Dean of Students Office is appealing to faculty and undergraduates to review the campus's policy regarding class absences.
