Winter session 'W' deadline
The last day for Winter session students to withdraw from courses
with a record of "W" is Monday, Jan. 14.
Learn about potential for muscle growth
The Department of Exercise Science is looking for healthy
male and female volunteers to participate in a research study during
January to examine how genetics affect the way a person responds
to weight training. Subjects must not have lifted weights with the
upper body for the previous 12-months.
Participants will receive 24 supervised weight training sessions
and a personalized weight training program from a personal trainer.
All those who complete the study will receive $150.

Jazz in July music program accepting applications
The Fine Arts Center is accepting applications for the
21st Jazz in July Summer Music Programs, scheduled for July 8-19.
The program is an intensive, performance-based jazz education program
held annually on campus. Four programs of study are offered: Instrumental
Workshops in Improvisation/Small Combo led by the Billy Taylor Trio;
Vocal Jazz Soloists with Resident Trios; Jazz String Chamber Music
Program with the Turtle Island String Quartet; and the new Big Band
Ensemble Program with professors David Sporny and Jeff Holmes. The
jazz string and big band programs run one week (July 15-19).

Rep. Ellen Story (D-Amherst) is holding district office hours
this month as follows:
Shutesbury: Thursday, Jan. 17, 11 a.m.-noon, town hall.
Pelham: Thursday, Jan. 17, 3:30-4:30 p.m., community center
library.
Amherst: Friday, Jan. 25, 10:15-11:15 a.m., Bangs Community
Center.
Office hours are set aside for residents to discuss ideas or
concerns about state government programs or legislative matters.
No appointments are needed.

Cahoon, Johnson to speak at Weekly Sports Luncheon
Hockey coach Don Cahoon and men's gymnastics coach Roy
Johnson will be the featured speakers at the Weekly Sports Luncheon
on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at noon at the Top of the Campus.

Physiology seminar at Medical School
Jack L. Leonard of the Medical School will present a seminar
entitled "Synaptic Vesicle Recycling, a View from a Molecular
Endocrinologist" on Monday, Jan. 14 at noon in the Physiology
Seminar Room, S4-308 of the Worcester campus.
Employees needed for nutrition study
Classified employees are needed for a study about how
people learn and respond to different nutrition-related cancer prevention
messages. The research is under the direction of Elena Carbone,
assistant professor of Nutrition. Data collected will only be used
for academic research purposes.
Participants will find out what kind of learning style works best
for them, learn about nutrition and cancer prevention, and receive
a $20 gift certificate to Atkins Farm and two learner-tailored nutrition
education messages to keep at the end of the study.
Participants will be asked to complete two telephone and one in-person
interviews. The total time commitment is approximately one hour
and 40 minutes. Participants must be full-time, classified Amherst
campus employees who do not work for the School of Public Health
and Health Sciences or any food service facility; be over 18 years
old; have no personal history of cancer (staff with a family history
of cancer are still eligible to participate); and be able to read
and write English.
