External funding may top $100m

By Sarah R. Buchholz, Chronicle staff

O

ne-third of the way through FY02, the campus is on track to receive more than $100 million in external support by the end of the fiscal year, according to interim Vice Chancellor for Research Fred Byron.

Byron told the Faculty Senate that faculty are "attracting new grants and contracts to the University...at a staggering level."

"After four months, we're up over $9 million over last year," he said. "Of course it reflects the increase in funding coming from the federal agencies in Washington, but it also reflects an amazing level of activity by the faculty."

Byron said the success also reflects well on the Office of Grant and Contract Administration, which is managing the grant and contract processes with a small staff.
