BHE approves Marine Science degrees

New advanced degree programs tied to the Intercampus Graduate School of Marine Sciences and Technology won final approval from the Board of Higher Education on Oct. 2.

The vote paves the way for the Am-herst, Boston, Dartmouth and Lowell campuses to jointly award graduate degrees in Marine Sciences and Technology.

IGSMST dean Brian Rothschild, who is also director of the School for Marine Science and Technology at UMass Dartmouth, said, "This degree program is a wonderful opportunity to bring the clusters of excellence at the four campuses into a coherent program of education, research, and public service to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts."

Officials expect the school will enroll approximately 100 master's and 50 doctoral students in its degree programs after it begins full operation. According to the President's Office, there are currently 76 faculty and professional staff affiliated with the IGSMST.
