construction boom on horizon
A dozen construction initiatives that have begun or are on the verge
of getting underway were described by Jim Cahill, director of Facilities
Planning, during a May 10 presentation on major capital projects
to the Faculty Senate.

Don't pass up chance to improve General Education
Responding to a report by the General Education Council at the Faculty
Senate's May 10 meeting, Chancellor David K. Scott said he hoped
more could be done for General Education, despite budget constraints.
Propriety
concerns derail honorary degree for Gill
Citing the Board of Higher Education's oversight of some aspects
of the University system and possible perceptions of a conflict
of interest, an honorary degree for Chancellor of Higher Education
Judith I. Gill has been put on hold, campus officials announced
late last week.
Outstanding
teachers and advisors recognized
Superlative efforts in the classroom and academic advising were
recognized this week as the Distinguished Teaching Awards were presented
to three faculty and two assistants, while another faculty member
and a professional staff member were honored as outstanding advisors.

wins A-10 Commissioner's Cup
Eight team titles carried the campus to a sweep of the Atlantic
10 Commissioner's Cup and the men's and women's cups, a first in
conference history.
Dale adds
new responsibilities to portfolio
Elizabeth Dale, special assistant for planning and development in
the Chancellor's Office, has begun coordinating the efforts of the
five areas within University Advancement (UA), Chancellor David
K. Scott announced at a May 11 meeting with UA staff.

Jonathan Laubinger believes in the power of education and of human
interaction to accomplish change.

face UNC in NCAA regional
The 23rd-ranked softball team was scheduled to play the University
of North Carolina Tar Heels in the opening game of NCAA regionals
on Thursday in Norman, Okla.
Union
marks anniversary of settling first contract
There were balloons, door prizes and, of course, plenty of cake
as the professional staff union threw itself a birthday party last
week.
