Biweekly payroll system to
begin in January

by Daniel J. Fitzgibbons, Chronicle staff

Question and answers about the introduction of biweekly payroll

B eginning in January, the University system is moving to a biweekly payroll system, according to Juan A. Jarrett, assistant vice chancellor for Human Resources.

Under the new system, which is part of an overhaul of administrative computing systems, all employees, including student workers, will be paid every two weeks, whether they receive paychecks or have direct deposit.

"It affects anyone who's currently on the UMass payroll system," Jarrett said, including the President's Office and all five campuses.

Early last year, said Jarrett, other state operations, including the Legislature and court system, were merged into a new state payroll system that also operates biweekly. At the time, he said, the University was allowed to delay biweekly payroll until PeopleSoft programs to upgrade human resources and financial systems were brought online.

The new Human Resources and Payroll System, though separate, is consistent with the state system, said Jarrett.

Because the initial transition from weekly to biweekly payroll could be problematic for employees who are unprepared for the gap, he said, the President's Office worked with the UMass/Five College Federal Credit Union to develop a transitional savings club for employees.

"The first week will probably be the most stressful," Jarrett said. "We wanted to find a way to ease the transition until employees get their next chunk of money."
