Three Arts and Humanities departments—Philosophy, Asian Languages and Literatures, and French and Italian—have new leadership this semester.

Philosophy professor Phillip Bricker is serving as acting head of his department, completing the most recent term of newly retired professor John Robison. Bricker has been graduate placement director in the department since 1997, a member of the Graduate Admissions Committee nine of the last 10 years, and chairs the speaker program and the department's current faculty search committee.

Alvin Cohen, professor of Chinese, is acting chair of Asian Languages and Literatures while chair Chisato Kitigawa, professor of Japanese, is on sabbatical this semester. Cohen served as chair from 1991 to '97, has been undergraduate advisor several times, and is a member of the Faculty Senate.

French and Italian has a new chair in Robert Schwartzwald. Schwartzwald has been graduate program director for the last six years, served as chair of the Dean's Committee on the Future of Advanced Foreign Language, Literature and Cultural Studies (Committee B), and is completing his third year as director of the Five College Center for Crossroads in the Study of the Americas.
