3 departments open semester
with new leaders

Arts and Humanities departmentsPhilosophy, Asian Languages and
Literatures, and French and Italianhave new leadership this
semester.
Philosophy professor Phillip Bricker
is serving as acting head of his department, completing the most recent
term of newly retired professor John Robison. Bricker has been graduate
placement director in the department since 1997, a member of the Graduate
Admissions Committee nine of the last 10 years, and chairs the speaker
program and the department's current faculty search committee.
Alvin
Cohen, professor of Chinese, is acting chair of Asian Languages and
Literatures while chair Chisato Kitigawa, professor of Japanese, is
on sabbatical this semester. Cohen served as chair from 1991 to '97,
has been undergraduate advisor several times, and is a member of the
Faculty Senate.
French
and Italian has a new chair in Robert Schwartzwald. Schwartzwald has
been graduate program director for the last six years, served as chair
of the Dean's Committee on the Future of Advanced Foreign Language,
Literature and Cultural Studies (Committee B), and is completing his
third year as director of the Five College Center for Crossroads in
the Study of the Americas.
