  Board hears update on UMass Online, approves room and board
fee increase

Board of Trustee members heard an update on plans for the University's proposed distance-learning program, UMass Online, and approved a 4.5 percent increase in room and board fees for the 2000-01 school year Nov. 8. It was the first full trustee meeting presided over by new board chair Grace Fey.

Administrators host exchange with University of Delaware colleagues
During her stint as an American Council on Education fellow at the University of Delaware last year, Elizabeth Dale made some new friends she wanted to share. So she arranged for officials from UMass Amherst to travel to Delaware last spring to see how their counterparts at another university operate.

3 million and counting...Library to celebrate acquisition milestone
The Library will celebrate the acquisition of its three millionth volume with a public program, exhibit, and reception on Wednesday, Dec. 6, at 4 p.m. on the Main Floor (Garden Level) of the W.E.B. Du Bois Library.

When Martha Nelson begins her new duties as director of Community Relations early next month, it will be a homecoming of sorts.

Majors Fair draws large crowd of undecided undergraduates
About 1,000 undergraduates explored academic opportunities at the Majors Fair Nov. 1 in the Student Union Ballroom. Staff from 84 departments shared materials with students and answered questions during the two-hour event.

Faculty participate in conference on future of language instruction
Faculty from across the curriculum will speak on the future of foreign-language instruction at the annual meeting of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Nov. 17-19 at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston.

Great minds think alike
Sleeping in the library may be nothing new for students, but a campus honor society is taking it to a new level. Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) members plan to spend the night in the Du Bois Library Saturday, Nov. 18 in an effort to raise $2000 toward renovating the third-floor reading room.
