Social Security chief to give talk

enneth S. Apfel, commissioner of the Social Security
Administration (SSA), will give a talk, "The Future of Social
Security," on Friday, Nov. 3 at 9:30 a.m. in the 163 Lincoln
Campus Center.
Apfel has served as
SSA commissioner since 1997. He heads an agency that delivers benefits
to more than 50 million people and has 65,000 employees. Prior to
coming to SSA in September 1997, Apfel worked in the Office of Management
and Budget in the Executive Office of the President where he was
associate director for human resources beginning in 1995. Apfel
also was assistant secretary for management and budget at the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services from 1993-95. He served
as legislative director to U.S. Sen. Bill Bradley (D-N.J.), and
as Bradley's chief staff person for federal social policy.
