Richard O. Roeder, 86, of Springfield, a
retired chief accountant in Accounting, died Sept. 9.
He served the University for 18 years before
retiring in 1984. Before coming to campus, he worked as an accountant
for Hershey Creamery Co. in Harrisburg, Pa.
He also had a military career, retiring as
a lieutenant colonel at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, where
he was chief of the management analysis division, Eighth Air Force
for 24 years. For his service he received the Air Force Commendation
Medal. Earlier in his career, he served as controller of Plattsburgh
Air Force Base in New York and as chief of the management analysis
division at Torrejon Air Force Base in Spain.
He held a bachelor's degree from Omaha University
in Nebraska, and he graduated from the Wharton Extension School
of Accounting and Finance and the Air University Command and Staff
School.
A member of Faith United Church, he was treasurer
of the Pioneer Valley Reserve Officers Association and volunteer
treasurer of the Springfield Science Museum Gift Shop.
He leaves his wife, the former Virginia Duane;
four sons and five grandchildren.
