MONTREAL ROYALS The Montreal Royals were the Triple-A level International League minor league affiliate of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Branch Rickey felt able to sign an African-American player before any other owner in part because he had a high-minor club in what was considered a relatively tolerant city.
