POLITICS Participation in politics was natural to Robinson, who always thought of his athletic exploits as serving a social as well as personal purpose. He supported Republicans and Democrats alike in his search for leaders who would address the concerns of the black community, particularly in the areas of voting rights and urban overty. Robinson supported and worked for Nelson Rockefeller, Republican govenor of New York and presidential aspirant. The moderate Rockefeller lost the Republican presidential nomination to Barry Goldwater despite Robinson's support.
