Alumna killed in bombing at
Hebrew University in Israel

A mong the seven people killed in the July 31 bombing at Hebrew University in Jerusalem was Janis R. Coulter, 36, who earned her B.A. in History at UMass in 1991.

Coulter, who was assistant director of graduate studies at the Rothberg International School, a New York branch of Hebrew University, had arrived in Jerusalem two days before the bombing to help run orientation for 19 American students who were studying at the Israeli school this summer.

Coulter was one of three Americans killed in the attack, which also injured more than 80. Hamas claimed credit for the bombing, saying it was revenge for an Israeli air attack on Gaza City that killed a Hamas military leader and 14 civilians, including nine children.
A native of West Roxbury, Coulter was raised as an Episcopalian, but converted to Judaism in 1996 and studied Jewish civilization at Hebrew University in 1996 and 1997.

She moved to Brooklyn in 1999 after joining the Rothberg International School staff.
