PROFESSIONAL STAFF UNION / MASSACHUSETTS TEACHERS ASSOCIATION
On both the Amherst and Boston campuses, the by-laws were adopted. What this means operationally is that we need to have elections.
Members indicated that you preferred to have staged elections in Amherst, with the Executive Committee being elected first, and the Delegate Council second.
So, lets get to the elections!
Nominations are now officially open for the following positions:
2 Co-chair positions
How do I make a nomination?
An email must be sent to Tom Carpenter, tomc @ bio.umass.edu, stating the nominee name, the position for which s/he is being nominated, and the work phone number of the nominee.
Who can run for these positions?
Any PSU member in good standing may run for any position. The person may be from UnitB or the Professional Staff Unit.
Can I nominate myself?
Yes, you may nominate yourself or another person or people.
Where can I find out more about a certain position?
Flyers describing the expected roles, time commitment and responsibilities of each position are being developed now, and will be available on the website (www.umass.edu/psumta), or via email request to firstname.lastname@example.org sometime Monday September 18.
Additionally, there will be an informational session on Tuesday, September 26 at from 11-2 in the Campus Center. The flyers will be available there, as well as members of the Structure Committee and the (former) Chapter Board to help answer questions.
Finally, if you cannot wait for the flyers, a general idea of the commitments of each position can be gleaned by reading the bylaws, also available on the website.
Why do you need a phone number?
All nominations must be formally accepted. A PSU staff member, or an election committee member will phone each of the nominees to hear the acceptance before the name is added to the ballot.
When is the election?
Nominations are slated to close on Wednesday, October 4, at midnight. The elections are currently scheduled for Friday, October 6. Although our bylaws and state law allow for this time table, we still need to confirm MTA/NEA bylaw compliance. If the timetable needs to be longer, you will be notified.
When will we elect the Delegate Council?
Nominations for Delegates will begin being taken on October 6, the day we elect the Executive Committee.
How can I help out?
We need people to run and to vote, mostly, but also to man the polls, to serve on the election committee, and to confirm nominations. If you can help with any of these things, please email Tom Carpenter at email@example.com, who is the Acting Election Committee Chair, or just send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
