Dr. William J. Manning is a professor in the Department of Plant, Soil & Insect Sciences with considerable research expertise on the affects of air pollution on plants.
He was invited to give the opening keynote paper at the International Conference on Environmental Pollution and Ecological Remediation in Industrial Regions held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai China on April 24-26, 2009. The conference was sponsored by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Institute of Applied Ecology at the Chinese Acadamy of Sciences. Dr. Manning's opening paper was entitled "The Role of Trees in Ecological Remediation and Sustainablility in Urban Environments." He also presented an additional invited paper entitled "Assessing Air Quality with Passive Samplers and Plants." While at the conference, Dr. Manning established a research collaboration with Professor Wenhua Wang at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Also during his April 23-28 China trip, Dr. Manning was invited to present a seminar at Shanghai Normal University entitled "Plants as Bioindicators for Ozone."
