The UMass Cold Spring Orchard is not only a research and educational facility, but also a working orchard involved in all normal farming activities. Volunteers are welcome at any time of year and may be experience pruning, fertilizing, planting, training, picking, and packing. If you wish to volunteer, please contact Joe Sincuk, the farm manager, at 413-323-6647.
The Durfee Conservatory also welcomes volunteers. Tucked away in a hustling and bustling campus, this greenhouse/arboretum is a sanctuary of calm and serenity. Many native and exotic plant species grace the greenhouse and outside grounds, and are available for public viewing. Volunteer tasks include watering, fertilizing, pruning, and integrated pest management techniques. The Durfee staff will provide hands-on training, so no previous experience is necessary. Volunteers must commit to a minimum of one hour/week during Durfee’s normal working hours of Monday – Friday from 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM. Interested? Call The Durfee Consevatory at 413-545-5234.
