The Department of Plant, Soil & Insect Sciences has many opportunities for students seeking employment during the academic year and summers. Students work as laboratory, greenhouse, field, and office assistants. Working in the Department is an excellent way to meet faculty and gain experience. Several jobs are often available to students who qualify for financial aid under the Federal Work-Study program. Priority for jobs is given to students who are majors/minors in the Department. If you are interested in the possibility of working in the Department of Plant, Soil and Insect Sciences, please either contact the Department Office (545-2004) or individual faculty members for employment information. Student jobs, when available in the Department, will also be listed on the PSIS Employment in the Department web page, and on the UMass Student Employment Office web page.
An Internship is a summer or semester-long work experience which allows students to "apprentice" with profesionals from their field. Internships are intended to be a learning experence, and most do not provide significant monetary compensation. Instead, academic credits are earned. Usually 12 credits are earned during one semester and 3 to 6 credits are earned for a summer program.
Students interested in doing an Internship must apply through the Office of Internships at Campus Career Network (CCN). Each student must have a faculty sponsor who is willing to supervise the work experience. An Academic Contract must be complete including planned activities, a statement of objects, as well as criteria and grading.
Internship opportunities, when available will be posted on the PSIS Employment in the Department web page. Internships are also listed with the CCN, on the Stockbridge School JobNet and the College of Natural Resources & the Environment's Field Experience Coordinator in 10A Stockbridge Hall.
Numerous employers contact the department seeking to hire recent graduates. Job advertisements are posted in the hallways near the PSIS Main Office in Fernald Hall, and outside Room 100 French Hall. Similar postings may also be available for electronic viewing on the Campus Career Network website. The Stockbridge School JobNet is another excellent resource for employment opportunities.
